Learning the Ropes

Well we are off to a flying start. We have spent the better part of the first 7 days getting to know one another and learning about our classroom and our procedures. It has been quite sometime since I have had a class all day and I will admit, I am learning a lot as well. My first goal is to create a place where your kids love to come each day. If I we can do that, then they will learn more than you have ever imagined. The class has come up with the rules, the consequences and rewards. They are posted in our room and I will be sending them home soon for you to see as well. Most importantly, we are learning to be kind no matter what, and to always be kinder than is necessary. I love your children already, they are great kids.

What To Expect

I would love to tell you everything to expect this year, but if you know me, you know I just can't do that. I am constantly looking for new ways to engage your children in learning that is exciting, fun, and meaningful. With that said, I am trying to ease them into the flow of school and the way I teach. So I am going to try to teach concepts in math that I think are relatively easier to comprehend during the first month or so. I am doing this so students can really focus on learning their times tables, work on learning their states, and practice their cursive writing. As we move into October it is really important that they know their facts. There isn't much we do in math that doesn't require them to be fluent in those facts. They will struggle if they don't learn them now. I will also be looking for them to start using cursive more and I will be writing on the board more and more. It is a requirement that 5th graders are able to do this. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

We are reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio. It is an amazing book that I read during the summer and I know your children are going to love it as well. Please ask them about it and to keep you up to date on what is going on in the book. I am reading this aloud to them each day for about 20 minutes. Click the link to see the video of the song "Wonder" by Natalie Merchant. The lyrics to this song start the book. She tells how she came up with the song, and sings it. It is quite stunning. I love when she talks about the people who were successful had loving families.
