Famous Performers of the 1930's
From everywhere across the United States music was a big factor to peoples life's. Some famous artists include The Andrew's Sisters, Gene Autry, Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Shirley Temple, and Ethel Waters.
The Andrew Sisters
The Andrew Sisters, LaVerne, Maxene, and Patty, have been musically active since 1925 but first became nationally known in 1937 when their recordings were leaked on national radio. There careers excelled from that point on and they even earned themselves a spot on the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Billie Holiday
Billie Holiday, born Eleanora Fagan, was an American singer/songwriter. Another nickname of hers was "Lady Day" by her friend and musical partner Lester Young. She was active from 1933 until she died in 1959. Billie also appeared in several movies like Lady Sings the Blues, New Orleans, and Strange Fruit.
Gene Autry
Gene Autry, born Orvon Grover Autry, is known as a singing cowboy on the radio, movies, and television. He is also remembered for his holiday such as Frosty the Snowman, which he wrote, and his greatest hit Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. He was active from 1931-1964. He was also enlisted in the military and served as tech support in World War 2 from 1942-1944
Jazz in the 1930's
Swing jazz and big band jazz were common forms of jazz in this era. Jazz actually originated from communities that thrived in the south and mainly in the African American community. New Orleans was a cultural hot spot where the earliest recognizable forms of jazz music took place.
