PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora
A warm welcome to Lucas who has started school in Whakarewa.
It has been a pleasure to see teams getting underway for the school year with a relationship-building focus to ensure they set routines for a successful year and grow their team culture to reflect our school values. Today I had the pleasure of attending Hōpara’s outdoor team assembly held in the amphitheatre. At the assembly, individual and team success was celebrated and students gave each other ‘shout outs’ to recognise the positive actions that have helped to build their team spirit.
Thank you to parents who are keeping in contact via email with teachers when you have a query or a concern. We are here to help and we can arrange to meet with you if a face to face meeting would be best. Our Community Conduct Expectations is attached as a start of year reminder to keep communication to teachers respectful. We care about your children and we want to work with you in their best interests.
Swimming sports
We will hold a modified swimming sports event for Years 5-8 this year. Each team will hold swimming races on the 1st and 2nd of March. Our Teacher Aides will support the timing of races. While we can’t have parent attendance this year, we look forward to sharing the results of competitive races in the newsletter. Zone swimming sports that bring schools together across North Canterbury and Canterbury have been cancelled this year.
Cultural narrative
At the end of 2021, we were gifted a cultural narrative for the school by local iwi, Ngai Tuāhuriri. The narrative is connected to our gifted name, Te Kura ki Waimātao, that means the school at the cold water. This is important because of our proximity to the Waimakariri River. The cultural narrative helps us to understand the place on which we stand. It is designed to help us understand the area in which we are situated and to grow our sense of belonging as a community.
Through our whole school inquiry, we will begin learning about the tributaries of the Waimakariri and the flora and fauna specific to them. Each team will focus on a particular tributary that will ultimately become the name of their team space. We will also investigate the nature of braided rivers such as the Waimakariri, as these are found in only a few countries across the world.
We look forward to sharing this learning with you across the year and we hope to include families on the journey with us.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
The board annually reviews the level of the donation that families make to our school.
For 2022 we have decided to move away from the graduated scale of donations which meant different donation amounts for families with a single child to those with 2 children or 3 children at Clarkville School.
The new structure is a set amount per child regardless of how many children in a family attend. This is in line with neighbouring schools.
For 2022 the donation is $100.00 per student for the year. Each term the amount of $25.00 per child will be added to your account. We hope that this is more manageable for families. The term 1 account will come to you via HERO next week.
Donations make it possible for us to provide for your children in a variety of important ways. Your donation is put to excellent use as outlined below.
If you have any queries about your account please contact Kathryn in the office.
Kind regards,
Sarah Long
Board Chair

SPORT
The Amazing Race 2022
Unfortunately, the Rakahuri Rage bike race has been cancelled this year due to covid so North Canterbury Sport and Recreation Trust have put together a fantastic new event to replace this. They have created an amazing race that meets covid restrictions and presents a great opportunity for both children and their families to get out on their bikes. This will not be run as a school event as it is on Sunday the 6th of March but you can enter a team by going on to the North Canterbury Sport and Recreation Trust website: https://www.sportstrust.org.nz/rakahuri-rage

PTA
Hello everyone,
Welcome back to school. It seems all the classes have hit the ground running and it’s nice to have the kids back into a routine and eager to learn!
Gala Cancellation
By now you would have caught up on the news we’ve had to cancel our Twilight Gala for this year. As this is our biggest annual fundraiser we now have to get our thinking caps on for other fundraising opportunities throughout the year.
To that end we should have something to share with you in the next newsletter so keep an eye out.
Raffles
We still plan on running the raffles that we would have run over the Gala period. Keep an eye out for information regarding this.
With that in mind …. can you donate a prize for the raffles, or do you have a contact that would like to support our school with a raffle prize? Please get in touch with the PTA, or Marie Ambrosiussen.
PTA Meeting
There is a PTA meeting next week (Tuesday), 6.45pm in the staffroom. Everyone is invited, you don’t have to be a member of the PTA to attend. If you attend one it doesn’t mean you have to attend others. It’s up to you! The main topic of discussion for this particular meeting will be
fundraising for our school. We welcome all ideas and volunteers to get these fundraisers off the ground!
In a similar vein, if you like to help the PTA but don’t actually want to officially join, then we can work with that! We have an email group called Friends of the PTA. How this works is that we email the group whenever we need help with something. If you are free and willing to help then great, and if not then maybe the next time. There’s no pressure whatsoever! If you are interested in joining the Friends of the PTA then please drop the PTA an email at clarkvillePTA@gmail.com and we’ll add you to our list!
PTA Facebook Page
If you haven’t already done so, please make sure you follow our PTA facebook page. This is where you will get reminders for school lunches, notices for upcoming events, etc.
