6th Grade Weekly Newsletter
4/5 - 4/9
AMI-X - Tuesday, April 20th (repeat)
- Students will NOT be reporting to school that day.
- Students will participate in their learning remotely by working on assigned work either on paper that will be sent home the previous day and/or online work assigned through Google Classroom. Teachers are expected to post a video on Google Classroom to walk students through the directions that day.
- There will be no live instruction for students on this learning day (aka NO Google Meets).
- Students are encouraged to email their teachers if and/or when they have questions but to be patient for a response since teachers will be in and out the building for vaccinations.
After returning to full in-person, please keep in mind the following things (repeat):
- Bring a water bottle to refill throughout the day since water fountains will still be unusable.
- Bring their school IDs everyday to every class (especially lunch) to make the process smooth to make sure the lunch line moves fast.
- Wear a secure and fitted face mask at ALL times unless eating or drinking. The CDC recommends that you wash face masks after every use as well.
- Try to keep as socially distant as possible in classrooms, hallways, and the lunch room.
- Wash or sanitize hands after EACH class before transitioning to another.
- Wash or sanitize hands after using the restroom.
- Wash or sanitize hands after using a tissue.
- Bring a CHARGED Chromebook to participate in most classes.
Congrats to our 6th Grade Students who received this week's Character Strong Trait!
Information from the 6th Grade Team
ELA
This week, we continued our Close Reading Unit. We have gone over denotation/connotation, tone/mood, and now some types of figurative language (similes, metaphors, and personification). We will continue to work on close reading strategies week by week. Next week, we will be continuing figurative language types by adding 4 more to our list.
We also continued our Social Justice Reading Passion Project. This will act as our overall assessment of this unit. It is an ongoing project that will focus on a social justice issue by reading a book and then using close reading strategies to determine overall meaning by using comprehension, author's craft and structure, and applying historical/cultural contexts. We will have one full work a day a week on Thursdays as well as a whole class discussion to reflect on what we are learning and our progress on Fridays.
If you have any questions, please let me know! Have a great 3 day weekend!
Science
This week in science we finished up our Seasons portion of the space unit. The kids took their tests on Monday and were offered corrections on Tuesday - in hindsight maybe a Monday test after a holiday for many was a mistake.
We have moved on to Moon Phases and will work on the following goals through this portion of the unit: I can show how the moon changes over time and I can predict future and past moon phases.
Next Friday, we are doing an activity involving sandwich cookies (Oreos). If you could donate to this project it would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!
Math
In math this week, students began to learn about ratios and equivalent ratios. Students have done really well with this topic and have worked really hard. Next week, we will be continuing our ratio journey with graphing ratios and comparing ratios.
Important!
Please read the attached letter from Dr. Haniger, regarding the Math Pathways (Accelerated) program available for 6th students next year in 7th grade.
Social Studies
This week in Social Studies! Students have been wrapping up their Central America Gallery Walk Projects. As part of this project, students have been preparing a presentation piece for their Jam Boards. Students have been working on a well constructed presentation by creating an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. This will truly help them showcase what they have learned about their Central American country. Presentations will begin on Friday 4/9 and conclude early Monday or Tuesday.
Afterwards, we are briefly going to review South America and then travel to Africa and Europe
Specials
P.E.
We started our Baseball/Softball unit outside this week, then had to transition inside with some Wiffle Ball due to the rain. We continued our weekly Cardio Days with a Tabata workout this week and will hopefully be able to get back outside next week for our next unit.

This week the 6th graders finished up our introductory unit for World Cultures and began our French unit. For the next few weeks, we will be comparing and contrasting French culture with American culture, as well as learning some basic French vocabulary.
Computers
Students just began focusing on Google Sheets. So far, they've learned basic vocabulary, how to manipulate rows and columns, how to enter information, how to make charts and customize them, and how to write simple formulas. We will spend the next couple of weeks practicing using different data sets.
