Cognitive Distortions of Reality
For Research Paper by RKT - Rochester University
Everything always begins with a thought. How we think and how we interpret the world around us influences how we feel. And how we feel stirs up our emotions. We then use those emotions as a filter that helps us interpret our life experiences. These interpretations are of course varied and often not very accurate. In fact, they can prevent us from seeing the world “how it is”, and instead force us to perceive the world based on “how we are”. And of course how we are depends entirely on how we process the world, which of course begins with the thoughts we allow ourselves to dwell upon. Take charge of those thoughts by working through these 10 cognitive distortions, and you take charge of your life.
How do cognitive distortions affect the mental health of adolescents and play a role in the high school dropout crisis?
The reality is... If one understood Cognitive Distortions, the use of stress release techniques would be useless.

The “Term Paper” – Applications of Cognitive Psychology
Progress Reports: Throughout the semester, you will have due dates for different prep work for the paper, including topic selection, finding references, a structured outline, and on-time final submission. These are assigned in order to ensure that you are keeping up with your paper and to prevent you from getting overwhelmed and trying to rush through it at the last minute.
Final Report Paper: The final paper must be a 5-10-page paper reviewing the literature on a topic in applied cognitive psychology, written in APA style, and must use a minimum of three peer-reviewed resources, though more than three is not only accepted but encouraged. Books and original reports from classic experiments may be used as sources, though modern interpretations and updated sources must be less than 10-years old. At least one of your main sources should be a modern/updated article.
Final Presentation:
In order to practice presentation and communication skills in the sciences,
each student is expected to present the findings of their literature review in class during the final session. Due to the online format of the class, this will be done by uploading a prepared presentation to the designated Moodle discussion board. Presentations should consist of visually appealing PowerPoint slides and last about 10-15 minutes each.
Peer Reviews:
As you present your findings, the rest of the class must provide constructive peer
feedback to the presenters via the discussion board on Moodle. Failure to complete the peer feedback forms will result in a significant loss of points for the Participation portion of the class.
