Summer School Classes for High School Freshman

Summer school information is available and published on the 9th Grade Registration tab of the Guidance Enrollment and Elective Registration webpage as well as in the School News Section of the Las Flores MS Homepage. High school students may register for up to 10 credits toward high school graduation credits. In addition to an online Health course (5 credits), several CTE 5 credit courses are available. Two Career Bootcamps through the CUSD College and Career Advantage program are being offered to students in 6-8th grade in Fall 2019.

Additional Opportunities for Budding Engineers through UCI

Does your child love to build things? or perhaps take them apart? UCI's FAB camp is for students entering 6th - 9th grades in Fall 2019. Each day will introduce different aspects of engineering and provide students the opportunities to apply the math and science concepts they are learning in school and to explore the career pathways in the fields of engineering. Saddleback College has a new updated summer academic program to help students review concepts learnt during the school year and/or to provide a head start to courses they may be taking in the new school year. Developmental Reading for Kids

Ages 8-11


In an encouraging and supportive environment, students who need help in improving reading skills will read high-interest works together. Instruction, as well as reading, will help improve and expand each student’s comprehension, word attack skills, text analysis, vocabulary building, effective annotating, and summarizing abilities.


Reading Comprehension Essentials 1

Ages10-13

Prerequisite: Completion of 5th grade


Need a little boost in visualizing a story or understanding the information in a textbook? Through a combination of direct, small group, and individual instruction, students will acquire the reading skills necessary for optimal success in 6th and 7th grade English. The following standards will be the focus of instruction: citing textual evidence to support analysis and inferences drawn from the text; summarizing the text objectively; and describing how characters change as a plot moves toward a resolution. Students will also compare and contrast the reading of a text by listening to or viewing an audio or video of the text.


Reading Comprehension Essentials 2

Ages 12-14

Prerequisite: Completion of 6th grade


Through a combination of direct, small group, and individual instruction, students will acquire the reading skills necessary for optimal success in 7th and 8th grade English. The following standards will be the focus of instruction: citing textual evidence that most strongly supports analysis and inferences drawn from the text; summarizing the text objectively by determining a theme or central idea; and describing how incidents propel the action forward. Students will also compare and contrast the reading of a text by listening to or viewing an audio or video of the text.


Interactive Writing Workshop

Ages 8-11


In this FUN, interactive, writing workshop, students will uncover the key to writing a great story. Through the use of theatre games, students will learn how to tap into their imaginations in a whole new way, and zap their ideas onto the page. They will discover the secret to creating memorable characters and learn how to bring passion to their writing. Students also will learn how to use descriptive words, similes, and active verbs, as well as discover the importance of incorporating sensory details in their writing. The techniques learned in this workshop will help children in all areas of creative writing. They will illustrate their stories, and at the end of the workshop, take home a journal with all of their work.


Writing Skills Development 1

Ages 10-13

Prerequisite: Completion of 5th grade


The ability to write logical arguments based on sound reasoning and relevant evidence is a cornerstone of the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards in writing. Students will acquire the writing skills necessary for optimal success in 6th and 7th grade English. Students will learn how to introduce and support claims. They will organize the reasons and evidence clearly, demonstrating an understanding of the topic or text, using appropriate transitions to clarify the relationships among ideas and concepts.


Writing Skills Development 2

Ages 12-14

Prerequisite: Completion of 6th grade


The ability to introduce claims and acknowledge and address alternate or opposing claims is an essential writing skill in 7th and 8th grade. Students will acquire the writing skills necessary for optimal success in 7th and 8th grade English. This class will teach students how to write arguments to support a claim, including a counter argument. Students will use logical reasoning and relevant evidence to support their thinking and demonstrate an understanding of the topic or text.


Writing Skills Development for High School Composition

Ages 13-18

Prerequisite: Completion of 8th grade


Writing arguments in an analysis of substantive topics or texts is a skill needed for high school writing success. Students will introduce a precise claim, establish the significance of the claim, and distinguish it from alternate or opposing claims. Students will supply evidence for both, pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of each for the reader. Students will learn to use transitions and transitional phrases to link the sections of text to create a cohesive argument.


Natural A's

Ages 10-17


Any student can significantly enhance grades, self-confidence, and chances for scholarships and college admissions by performing academic skills in alignment with the brain's natural patterns. This makes note taking, reading, studying, memorizing, and test taking amazingly efficient. Students also will discover simple methods for understanding math and other subjects, optimizing focus and concentration, and preventing test anxiety. Registrants of all ages describe this class as "awesome," "necessary," and "easy to understand." The instructor, Curtis Adney, M.S., J.D., graduated at the top of his college class with a 4.0 GPA and earned a Juris Doctor degree from Brigham Young University. Parents are welcome to register and participate with their child(ren).


Study Strategies For Teens

Ages 13-16


Topics include: practical organizational skills to help you with your school work, as well as how to better manage your time; note-taking techniques (how to summarize and use symbols and abbreviations to stimulate recall of information); how to study for tests; strategies for taking tests and dealing with test anxiety; improving reading comprehension; and writing papers and essays.

Prerequisite: Completion of 5th grade math


Through hands-on activities and expert direct instruction, students will acquire the critical skills necessary for optimal success in Math 6.

Through hands-on activities and expert direct instruction, students will acquire the critical skills necessary for optimal success in Math 7.

Ages 10-13

Prerequisite: Completion of 7th grade math


Through hands-on activities and expert direct instruction, students will acquire the critical skills necessary for optimal success in Math 8.


Middle School Algebra 1 Critical Concepts

Ages 12-14

Prerequisite: Completion of 7th grade or 7th grade accelerated math


Through hands-on activities and expert direct instruction, students will acquire the critical skills necessary for optimal success in middle school Algebra 1. Middle school students who may be enrolled in middle school Algebra 1 will benefit from opportunities to explore math concepts in-depth in preparation for the pace and rigor of Algebra 1.


Middle School Geometry Critical Concepts

Ages 12-14

Prerequisite: Completion of middle school Algebra 1


Through hands-on activities and expert direct instruction, students will acquire the critical skills necessary for optimal success in middle school Geometry. Middle school students who may be enrolled in middle school Geometry will benefit from opportunities to explore math concepts in-depth in preparation for the pace and rigor of middle school Geometry.


High School Algebra 1 Critical Concepts

Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra 1


Through hands-on activities and expert direct instruction, students will acquire the critical skills necessary for optimal success in high school Geometry.

UCI offers numerous programs for middle and high school students in the arts ranging from Ceramics, Photography, Drawing/Painting, Dance, Drama, Digital Music Production as well as Coding and Robotics courses. Summer is the Perfect Time to Volunteer!

Summer is the ideal time to spend some time volunteering in the community whether you seek out your own opportunities such as volunteering at the local library reading to younger children, assisting with your local sports club, tutoring younger students or through organizations such as Lions Heart, Assisteens, or Habit for Humanity Youth Programs. The benefits to youth volunteers include helping youth develop social responsibility, gaining confidence, learning new skills and providing the experience of helping others. It also helps build relationships and improves communication and critical thinking skills while providing exposure to possible career options.
