Professional Resources from SLS
Using Academic OneFile to find authoritative research
Make decisions based on proven best practices.
Using Gale's Academic OneFile, you can locate research studies, journal articles, abstracts and presentations that can inform your professional practice.
To start, use Google as your browser and login to your Google account. From the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES website, visit the School Library System page and select the W-FL BOCES Database Portal.
Select the first database, Gale's Academic OneFile.
You'll be asked for the Password; see your librarian or administrator if you can't remember it. Once in the database, sign in with your Google account. This will allow you to save material to your Google Drive.
Conduct a basic search using just one or two keywords. Suggestions will appear to help you focus your search. Click the > arrow to search the database of over 18,000 journals and research articles.
Limit your search to return only Peer Reviewed Journals. This will ensure that your results have been critically evaluated by experts in the field.
Narrow your search further by selecting one (or more) Subjects within the topic.
Your results will be listed by Relevance, with the ones most closely matching your search appearing first. Click on the title to open the article.
Click on a Name to find more studies done by that researcher. Click on the Journal Title to find more articles from that journal.
When you find articles you'd like to save, click the Save button and they will be added to your folder. If you select PDF Pages, you will open the article in its original layout form. You can then download it to your computer and save it as a PDF.
When you find an article that fits your needs, you may wish to use the Related Resources button to find more articles on the same subject.
Use Topic Finder to help you hone your search even further and get suggestions for subjects closely related to your original search.
Go to your folder to find all your saved articles. Click on the More button on the top of the screen and open My Folder.
Select Download to add these articles to your Google Drive.
The articles will appear in a folder in your Google Drive as text files. If you visit Academic OneFile again and download documents, they will appear in the same folder. To save articles as PDF files, you'll need to download the PDF files to your computer individually.
Happy Searching!
Academic OneFile is just one of several professional development resources available through W-FL BOCES SLS. You can use many of these same search strategies when using other databases.
