Juliana was very committed to her English project in which she had to learn about her heritage. She chose learning how to cook. She believed that by learning how to cook dishes from her Hispanic heritage she could build her relationship with her family as well as learn about her cultural background. She built her relationship with her family by discussing what our favorite dishes were and by asking her grandmothers, aunts, and sometimes even me, her mom, how they would come about cooking some of these dishes.
In the beginning of the school year Juliana asked her siblings, mom, and dad what their favorite dishes were and then went from there. She decided what were her favorite and what her family’s favorites were. Juliana was able to communicate more with her Mexican grandmother by practicing her Spanish. She also communicated more with her Uruguayan grandmother by talking to her over the phone in Argentina. She asked her aunt plenty of questions about recipes she is very well known for.
Not only did Juliana learn how to cook some Mexican dishes from her mother’s side of the family, but she also learned to cook a couple Argentine ones from her father’s side as well. We all enjoyed her cooking very much! Her enchiladas were the best and her lemon/lime chicken was delicious too; this was her own recipe that she wanted to prepare for us. Her father passed away in February and he was able to enjoy the enchiladas she prepared. Without a doubt this will be a very memorable memory she will have of this project.
