Music 6:
We have transitioned to our unit on beat and rhythm. We have discussed the differences between beat and rhythm, and are having a great time composing our own percussion pieces! We are also reviewing music notation: specifically note and rest values. This will improve our ability to read music.
ARTS ALIVE 8:
Check out our student-produced talk show! Our amazing 8th graders read a detailed synopsis of the plot of Verdi's Aida, analyzed it, created character profiles, and THEN wrote their own talk show to teach you all about conflict in the opera! They got to choose roles, character voices, and even practice some stage combat! We hope you will enjoy our talk show!
We will begin watching the opera in class next week!

What we are working on.
6th Grade
We are starting a watercolor unit, we will be experimenting with the many techniques of watercolor, and applications, we will first have some practice and instruction, then we will be putting what we learned to the test.
7th Grade:
Students are starting their superhero unit and we will be exploring how to draw the human form, breaking down shapes, and really studying how to get what is in our mind out on paper. We will start with basic figure construction, and they will also be using an online superhero creator to build characters. Once they have drawn their characters they will be designing their very own comic book cover, using the styles we learned in class.
8th Grade
Students will work on finishing their self portraits and then we will moving into our next project which will be a bookmaking process, with telling a story through pictures and design.
As always, any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at anytime. Thank you all for your continued support, and am really enjoying what I am seeing creatively from our students so far.
Artfully yours,
Mr Chapman

SECOND STEP @ FMS
The FMS Staff wants your child to be successful in school, and that means going beyond the basics. Excelling in academic classes is important, but students also need to know how to learn, make good decisions, handle strong emotions, and get along with others.
Today (Friday), we'll begin the Second Step Middle School Program, which focuses on skills and concepts that are designed to help students both in and out of school.
These include:Mindsets and Goals: Students learn about ways to grow their brains and get smarter, along with research-based strategies for achieving goals and handling difficult situations.Values and Friendships: Students learn to identify their personal values and use those values to make good decisions and build strong, positive relationships.Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions: Students learn the positive role emotions play in their lives, how to handle unhelpful thoughts and strong emotions, and specific strategies for calming down. Serious Peer Conflicts: Students learn how to identify and avoid serious conflicts, resolve conflicts that can't be avoided, think about other people's perspectives, and help stop bullying and harassment at school.
If you have any questions about the Second Step Middle School Program, please do not hesitate to contact the School Counseling Office for more information. Thank you for supporting your child in learning the skills and concepts that lead to success in school and in life.
