Maize South Middle School
March 2023
A message from Principal Mr. Cort Haynes
MSMS Parents/Families:
April signals our final decent toward landing another great school year! Spring sports are underway and State Assessments are upon us. Good luck to all Mavs!
We have several year-end activities planned for our students. Participation in those events is a privilege through good behavior, remaining in good academic standing, and attending school on a regular basis. All students must adhere to these expectations in order to be a part of these wonderful memory-making events.
In light of more school crisis situations around the nation, we continue to be mindful of safety practices. Maize has incorporated a variety of systems to keep all students and staff safe. Our key FOBs for all doors and Safe Defend System are examples of improved safety measures to maximize this effort. School Resource Officer, Alex Agler, is on campus each day to provide additional support for all.
Our Mav Night In was a huge success! I would like to thank our PTO members and President, Jennifer Vogts for her leadership this year! Our students and staff benefit from resources and treats that this group provides.
Let us know how we can continue to partner with you toward the success of your child(ren). #Huddle

Nurses Corner: Health Room reminders
Maize School district is offering FREE dental screenings by GraceMed Dental Hygienists on April 11th 2023- They will provide dental screenings, cleanings, fluoride varnish and sealants. All students who attend a Maize school are eligible for these services. If you already have a dentist you see, please continue care with them. But if you do not have dental insurance and your child is in need of a screening or cleaning, or has a tooth that has been bothering them, please plan to have them attend this screening!!
Dental care is so important for our whole health! If your child has never had a screening, they need to go to this. Please take advantage of this opportunity!
If you would like to sign your child up for this screening, please reach out to me. I will get you the necessary form that will need to be filled out and returned by April 4th.
The district will have transportation for the students to and from the screening, it will take place during the school day. Parents do not have to be present.
State Assessment Spirit Week
We will have State Assessments April 11th- April 14th in ELA and Math and April 18th -19th Science for 8th grade.
Monster Mania in FACS Class
Mrs. Kittle's FACS class went to visit the 1st graders at Maize South Elementary to discuss monsters. Our Mavericks handed out pictures of friendly monsters and sat and colored them with the 1st graders. They asked questions like: How old is your monster? What age and name for your monster? What does your monster eat? What is your monster afraid of?
What the littles didn't know is that the big kids were going to go back, and over the next few weeks, they were going to create and sew the monsters that the littles had colored and described. Our Mavericks got to go back to MSES this week and present the monsters they made to the students at MSES. Fun was had by all!

2023 Summer Driver Education
2023 SUMMER DRIVER EDUCATION
Enrollment Information and Mandatory Parent/Student Meeting
USD 266 Maize Schools will once again offer summer driver education. Any student who turns 14 on or before Thursday, June 1, 2023 and has or will graduate 8th grade by June 1st will be eligible to enroll in summer driver education.
Students will have 31 days (April 12th - May 12th) to complete the coursework online through Google Classroom. Students failing to complete the online portion by May 12th will be dropped from the class and forfeit the $200 enrollment fee. Students will also complete at least five, one hour driving sessions starting no earlier than May 30th (schedule to be determined after class begins). We prefer that students get an instructional permit at the DMV in advance of the class and spend as much time as possible driving in safe locations with their parents. Practicing with parents before class starts is a plus considering that driver education is only five hours of driving.
Enrollment will be offered on a first come, first serve basis with enrollment limited to the first 150 students to register. Enrollment registration will open at 8:00 AM on Monday, April 3, 2023 and will close on Monday, April 10, 2023 or when enrollment capacity has been reached. Please enroll early as the class will fill up fast. To register go to https://forms.gle/3ySnBoDJos1bdieB8 (form not accessible until April 3rd at 8 AM).
Mandatory Enrollment Meeting
The first 150 students to register will receive a Google invite to attend the mandatory enrollment meeting on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 6:00 PM in the Maize South High School Auditorium. A parent or guardian and the student MUST commit to attending this meeting. Failure to attend the meeting will result in the student being dropped from the class. At the meeting, we will discuss the driving schedule, the Kansas Driver's Handbook Test, online class expectations, answer questions regarding the online enrollment form, collect the $200 enrollment fee, administer eye tests (please bring corrective eyewear if needed), and have you sign the enrollment forms. Students will need to bring any type of license or permit they might already have to the meeting.
The cost of summer driver education is $200 with payment due in full on the date of the meeting. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunches may apply for waived fees during the enrollment process. No registrations or late payments will be accepted after the mandatory enrollment meeting on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.
Kansas Driver Handbook Test
Students who don’t have a valid instruction permit or who have an instruction permit that will expire prior to the end of the summer drivers education will be required to take the Kansas Driver Handbook Test. This test will be administered in person at a location to be determined the week after the enrollment meeting. Students who are required to take the test must pass the Kansas Handbook Test at a minimum Mastery Level of 80% in order to complete the course. The student will be given three proctored opportunities to successfully complete this test. For a digital copy of the Kansas Driver Handbook, please click the link below. Print copies of the handbook may be purchased at any local Drivers License Exam Station.
