Dear Hawley Parents/Guardians, Teachers, and Staff,


I hope that all of you and your families are healthy, safe, and well. Week 1 of Distance Learning is in the books- WOW, what a whirlwind.


THANK YOU to all of you for your dedication, caring, cooperation, patience and support. What we are doing right now is a testament to the core of what defines the Hawley School Community.


The message I will continue to echo is that everyone just needs to just keep doing the best that they can. No worries if not perfect. We will stay in touch, adjust and move forward, together. This is ever-evolving and we will improve and get better each week.


Everyone will be faced with their own "reality." We will continue to support each other. Please reach out to me with any question or need that you have.

~ Story Time With Mr. Moretti ~

During this new normal, what I miss the most is seeing the kids. I want to stay connected. I have a book series that I used to read to my boys when they were little. There are 45 stories in the series. I will read them, record them, and send you the links.


Feel free to play one each day. This helps me connect to the kids, they get to see me (AND you get an 8 minute or so break ;0) Continue to send messages or pictures of the kids enjoying the stories, they brighten my day!

Big picture

Student Work

Each Sunday evening/Monday morning, teachers will send out assignments for the week (some may be daily as we move through the weeks). If your child receives special education services or intervention support, those providers will also reach out, possibly a different day as to limit the number of emails you receive at one time. All staff is to coordinate workload as to not overwhelm.


Work: Do the best that you can. We know you are not educators and have other things you are dealing with. If you or your child becomes overwhelmed, start with Reading and Math only and then build from there.


Work Logs: Teachers will include this in their plans. Please fill out the work log so we get a real sense of what is being done, what CAN be done. We will use that information to adjust appropriately. Older kids can fill the log out themselves where younger kids may need adult assistance. The log is sent back on Friday in a manner outlined by your classroom teacher (picture, email, SeeSaw App, Class Facebook page, Google Classroom, etc). Click Here if you need the Student Work Log.


Format/Platform: Grade 4 is currently using Google Classroom. Grade 3 will begin this as well starting this upcoming week with Grade 2 launching Google Classroom on April 6 if ready, (or after break). This significantly simplifies receiving and returning work, as well as the opportunity to ask questions. Grades K-1 will be utilizing the SeeSaw App. Videos from the teachers have slowly started and will increase. This may include Morning Meeting and/or Read-A-Loud and moving eventually to instruction.


Please note that we are progressing and evolving slowly. This is purposeful. Parents need to set up routines and procedures and organize their new world. Students need to adapt to working at home and probably with more independence and perseverance than ever. Teachers have to explore, train, research and gather resources (from home). The District needs to examine resources and assure common experiences K-12. All challenging tasks but together we are achieving success.

~ Questions / Suggestions ~

This unprecedented situation has changed everything about how we conduct business. With this Twilight Zone adjustment comes a million questions a day. In our fast-paced society, we all want answers immediately. This is going to be the hardest adjustment. None of us are going to be able to be on and available 24-7.


Over the next few days/weeks, teachers are going to be developing a system to better be able to answer questions that you or your child(ren) may have. It is going to be systematic and organized. It will require cooperation and understanding. There will be questions that need an immediate response while certainly there are questions that can wait.


SUGGESTIONS:

  • Set up work areas and schedules (build in breaks)
  • Remember nothing about the work is urgent. No work, at our level, must be completed the day it is assigned. If you have a question or if your student is struggling with an assignment, take a break. Wait for input from the teacher or the answer and revisit.
  • Ask your question directly to the staff member responsible for your question (classroom teacher, special area teacher, intervention support, special education, related services, mental health, etc). This will significantly increase the response time.
  • Collect a few important questions and ask your teacher for a scheduled phone call to address all at one time
  • Include simple questions on the Student Work Log
  • Improvise: you can re-create an assignment if you can't print, use different materials as available, use your own strategies (that WE were taught as kids ;0)
  • Step a way, unplug and just have fun!

Devices

We will continue to work with families to provide devices as needed. Most families have reached out to their teacher if a device is needed. Central Office had begun handing them out and we will continue distributing them during this upcoming week at Hawley. Someone will be reaching out to provide more specific information.


Students in Grades K-1 will receive an ipad with students in grades 2-4 receiving chromebooks.

Important Reminders / General Info

  • If your child wants to send me an email (through your email address), I would love it ;0) and will reply.
  • April Vacation will remain with no work being sent home or expected to be completed.
  • There is a terrific resource on our school website, it is entitled DISTANCE LEARNING RESOURCES. It includes tutorials and links to web-based materials (books and videos). It will continuously be updated as resources become available.
  • It goes without saying that no videos or audio recordings of staff should end up on social media or shared with other people. Discussions of other students or sharing of their work is not appropriate. Let's be role-models.
