The Mustang Round Up
November 6, 2022
Mustang athletics shine!
After our first full season of middle school athletics, the Marshall athletes have stood tall above the rest. This fall, SDUSD middle school athletics included Boys and Girls Basketball and Track. The season concluded this weekend and Marshall took 4 out of the 5 possible championship banners! Last week, we won the district championship in Boys Track, Girls Track, and Overall Team competition.
Yesterday, our Girls Basketball Team beat an impressive #1 seeded Standley Middle School team 27-10 for the district championship! Also, yesterday the district hosted the individual track finals at Clairemont High School. Although official results haven't been posted yet, we had a lot of medals and personal bests. You can follow the results here.
These athletic achievements don't come easy. It takes hard work and commitment from our student athletes. They have to follow the same academic and citizenship standards as the high school athletes in the district. I also know that involvement after school goes beyond our middle school teams. This past weekend we had students competing in soccer, travel baseball, gymnastics, cricket, and football. For example, on Saturday our Scripps 13-U Pop Warner played in the league finals. Go Scripps!
A special shout out is deserved to all of the parents and coaches for making this happen. While our students are thriving on the field, it takes dedication and commitment from the adults in student's lives. After all, we know who's driving them all over the county!
Winter Sports sign-ups just opened. you can sign up your student for Volleyball and Soccer here. Winter sports begin Jan. 3, 2023
Congratulations to all of our student-athletes!

Who's Who at Marshall...
MMS is excited to introduce you to Education Specialist Jackie Gordon. Mrs. Gordon currently works with our students with Mild/Moderate disabilities, teaches our study skills class, and is also an advisor for our GSA Club and Marshall Mentors. Her passion and energy has helped make MMS fun and engaging for so many of our students. Here's more about Mrs. Gordon:
How many years in education? I have worked in San Diego public schools for about 9 years. I have experience in elementary school and middle school with students with a variety of ability levels. I also have experience working at a Summer camp at a paint your own ceramics store which was a very fun and unique experience.
Why middle school?- Middle school definitely chose me. Middle school is a pretty awkward time for almost every student, so I was not necessarily eager to return to middle school as my career. However, once I started working at Marshall, I quickly learned to love working with students this age and I can't imagine working with younger or older students. I love middle school because they are old enough to start being independent, but they are generally still motivated to build positive relationships with staff members. There is nothing like the sense of humor of a middle school student! This is also a time when kids are deciding what kind of people they want to grow up to be. I thoroughly enjoy helping them figure out who they are and how to get where they want to be.
What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend? I enjoy spending time with family and friends in nature, watching tv shows and/or movies, and going out to eat. I also recently learned how to ride a bicycle so I try to ride my bicycle regularly so I don't lose the skill it has taken me so long to learn!
What impact do you hope to make at Marshall? I hope to help all students recognize that even though we are all different, each person brings something valuable to the table.

Some Things to Consider...
I owe an apology to every parent I've spoken to in the 19 years I've worked in middle and high school because I have been guilty of the very thing the author in this article argues against. This piece in the Washington Post reviews a book by pediatrician Kenneth Ginsberg where he shares that we treat the teen years as something to dread. The deficit mindset that many of us parents have about the teen years being something to resist or be afraid of is getting in the way of us actually working with teens in a productive helpful way. It's a great read that will help many of us re-think how we work and interact with teens.
