Upcoming Events
February 5 - Global School Play Day
Because play relates so closely to social emotional learning, the Keith staff have agreed to have two hours of play as part of global play day! Global Play Day is Wednesday February 5th. Teachers will send more specific information should they choose to participate.
The importance of free play and social emotional learning, because play can be so varied, there are many benefits to it. The benefits are just as real for preschoolers all the way up to middle-schoolers.
- Social development: Playing with others means noticing and recognizing social cues, listening, and taking another person’s perspective. This are key aspects to developing empathy. Social play also requires students to share ideas and express their feelings while negotiating and reaching compromises with peers.
- Emotional development: In social and guided play, children learn self-regulation by following norms and paying attention while experiencing feelings such as anticipation or frustration. Play also teaches students how to set and change rules, and how to decide when to lead and when to follow.

Second Step Lessons
Parents, this week your children focused on the second step lesson below. Please take a moment to talk with your children about how they took time to show positive behavior at school.
Managing Learning Challenges
Using our Calming-Down Steps at Keith Elementary helps us be better learners! There are many opportunities to practice your calming-down skills at school. You may have a strong feeling when you have to wait, or when you make a mistake, or when you have trouble finishing a difficult task. These are perfect moments to practice using your stop signal, naming your feeling, and calming down. When staff and students at Keith Elementary calm down our emotions, it helps us all learn.
Our focus for next week is listed below. We will review the following with your children when they return to school on Monday.
Say the Problem
We all have problems here at Keith Elementary School that can be hard to solve. Using Second Step Problem-Solving Steps can help us solve our own problems! The first step is S: Say the problem. When you have a problem, it’s very important to say what the problem is respectfully and without blame. Knowing exactly what the problem is will help you find the best solution! This week, remember to use your words and say the problem respectfully.
5th Grade Party - Parent Planning Committee Meeting
Dear 4th/5th Grade Parents -
We know that many of you are excited to hear what direction we are heading for the graduation party for the Class of 2027. We are working hard on firming up dates, going over the budget and talking to former Event Chairs regarding best practices and tips on what works and what doesn’t. We have also been talking to many parents to find interested individuals who would like to head up committees as committee chairs. So far, we have found people to fill all the chair positions except for “Class Gift”, “Games” and “Fundraising/Sponsorships.” If you (and a spouse or friend) are interested in chairing this committee, please let me know as soon as possible.
Mark your calendars for the Parent Meeting which will be held on February 5, 2020 at 7:00 pm in the Keith Media Center. Volunteer opportunities, the budget and best practices will be
discussed. We will also be discussing and voting on the best date to hold the party - June 9 or
11. You will meet the Committee Leads and they will share ideas around entertainment,
decorations, food, and graduation ceremony.
4th grade parents: I am including you on this invite in case any of you are interested in seeing
what this party is all about and would like to possibly head up or lead a committee next year. It’s always best to see first hand vs digging through files and putting puzzle pieces together.
So far, we have planned a monthly bagel sale Dec-May to help raise funds. Forms should come home Jan 23 and we are asking for a full year payment (5 months for $5) by Monday, Jan 27 to help supply the budget we need for vendor deposits. Keep a lookout for the flier and you can always make a cash donation to help us hit our goal. On average the cost per child for this party is $50-60 each.
We look forward to working with all the parents to make this a wonderful experience for our 5th grade children!
Best,
Michelle Powell
