Gladstone High cheer team wins state championship
Gladstone was also a winner of the 2022 Leslie Maley Choreography award. In addition, team captain Grace Christiansen was chosen as the OCCA academic scholarship winner.
"This year has been the farthest from normal. But day after day, week after week, these kids showed up," said Coach Shelby Crystal. "They never lost sight of that tiny light at the end of the tunnel. They held each other accountable and encouraged each other every step of the way. Words cannot express how proud we are as their coaches."
"We learned a lot this year and I am excited to use what we learned and take it into next season," said team captain Aubrey Holowati, a junior. "I'm hopeful for the future of our program. We just keep getting better and better; everyone on our team works so hard!"
The team will compete next at USA Spirit Nationals in Anaheim, California on February 25 and 26.
Gladstone High launches new esports team
School was out over an hour ago, but a group of teens is gathered in the tech lab playing a variety of virtual reality games from Fortnite to Madden. The Valorant competition with a team from another state is about to begin.
With 30 members, Gladstone High School's new esports team is one of the largest activities at the school, launched in January thanks to an $8,000 grant from the Gladstone Education Foundation.
The teens play seven online games, including Minecraft, Valorant, Rainbow Six, NBA IIK, and chess, against teams across the nation. So far, they are undefeated, with wins against Ohio, Indiana, and New York.
The fact that 80% of members had never previously been involved in extra-curricular activities shows the club's potential to engage a new group of students in their school community. The group is as dedicated as traditional sports teams, committed to daily practice sessions and two competitions each week.
Along the way, they build skills in collaboration, strategy, teamwork, and communication.
"I love video games, so this is exciting," said freshman Kellen Hirte, a Valorant enthusiast. "I don't really do normal sports, so this is a way to be social, stay competitive, and have the chance to earn scholarships."
"Esports have been big at the college level, and now high schools are getting involved," said coach Dusty Long, a technology teacher. "This is a fun way to engage students while they build connections, practice strategy, learn collaboration, and boost communication skills."
Next year the team plans to get uniforms and will participate in both the fall and spring competition seasons so athletes involved in other sports can join the team in their off season.
