Half Day School
River Trail Maps
Fifth-graders took a virtual tour on a river trail practicing their math skills along the way. Teachers like Caroline Logan often make projects practical and applicable to real life situations such as the River Trails Project.
“It’s a project that helps students practice their fractions. Students create a trail map that includes ‘a key’ using fractional distances to places along the trail,” Mrs. Logan explained. Students were given a 60 centimeter trail to work from and created objects along the path that visitors would see on their simulated tour, she explained.
“Students really enjoy these types of projects because they can work collaboratively and autonomously creating their own trail and the objects to place along side it,” Mrs. Logan said.

Shark Tank Pitch
Student entrepreneurs will showcase their inventions as part of an eight-week Shark Tank project sponsored by the Learning Fund Foundation, a partnership of District 103.
Students interested in participating in another Shark Tank program after winter break are invited to visit the culmination of the current Shark Tank entrepreneurial pitching competition from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, to catch a glimpse of the finished inventions showcased by 45 students. The event takes place at Half Day School in the second floor loft area.
Student projects are judged on creativity and the uniqueness of their entrepreneurial idea, how well they showcase their invention to the judges, how thorough their presentation of information is presented, how they have thought out the pricing of their service or goods, along with grammar, neatness, etc.
Before presenting their final projects to judges, the Shark Tank students learn about the invention and entrepreneurship process with coaches Rachel Chiesa and Sue Vani. LFF would like to thank its sponsors Code Ninjas, Nexus Pharmaceuticals, and Culver's.

PTO Partnership
Volunteers Needed
D103 PTO is thrilled to announce that we will be hosting our first ever Half Day Fun Fair on Friday, Jan. 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.! This exciting inaugural event will take over Half Day School like never before. Students will enjoy over 30 different carnival games and activities along with snacks and prizes.
In order to make this event a smashing success, we are in need of a large number of parent volunteers. There are a wide variety of opportunities to get everyone involved at every skill level. From setting up and running the games to helping with decorating or handing out snacks, you're sure to find something to assist with. But that’s not all, if you have a special skill or unique idea that you would like to contribute to the fun fair, please send an email to hd@d103pto.org.
If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up early as spaces will fill quickly.
Due to space constraints, this event is for Half Day students and parent chaperones only. Please also note that this is not a drop off and pick up event, all Half Day students in attendance must enter and leave with an adult chaperone. Carpooling is highly encouraged.
Be on the lookout in the coming weeks for more information about this exciting new event!
