The Carleton Chronicle
A weekly update from Carleton Middle School
Welcome Back!
We would like to take a moment to welcome back our students, parents, and all staff to Carleton Middle School. If you are new to Carleton, for whatever reason, welcome! We are thrilled to have you with us and look forward to a tremendous year. If you've walked through our building, you've noticed that many updates have been made. We are very fortunate to have such a supportive community that passed our bond in 2016. I think the new and improved parking lot is my favorite update. Thank you for following the markings on the asphalt and pulling your vehicle all the way forward during drop off and pick up.
One of the many ways we will communicate with you throughout the school year is by using the "Carleton Chronicle," our one page, email newsletter with information about our school. We also send out Twitter messages @CarletonColts, Instagram pictures and messages at carletoncoltswcs, update our website regularly, and send REMIND text messages. If you are having trouble with any of our communications please visit the main office and we will make sure we have updated information. In today's age of technology, there's no excuse for not being informed. We hope you will take time to read all of the information sent out to stay on top of your child's education.

Getting the School Year Started
Developing routines and good study habits often begin in the middle school years. It is common for students to have a certain amount of homework every night and is important that they have a system for completing such tasks for their learning and reinforcement. Below is some information pertaining to homework.
Think it through
Before your youngster begins, have her make a to-do list. Example: write a poem, read a chapter, solve 10 math problems. Then, suggest that she number the tasks, from toughest to easiest, and start with the hard stuff. This "save the easiest for last" strategy will help her finish on a high note, perhaps inspiring her to get in some extra time studying.
Think about time
Ask your child to consider different time slots he can use to get work done. For instance, maybe he could set aside a weekend morning or Sunday night. Also, some students have time after lunch to tackle a few problems or read an excerpt from their book. Encourage your child to be productive while at school, often finishing homework during class time if the teacher allows. The more they do, the more time they'll have for fun later.
Think positive
Help your middle schooler see homework as a chance to prove their independence by getting their work done on time and doing it by themselves. Boost their confidence by telling them, "Homework gives you a chance to show all that you know." And give them a thumbs-up (or a fist pump) when they do just that!
I hope you found these tips helpful. Working together, we can help every student succeed.
