Mrs. Abell's News
Here's what's hip-hop and happening in our classroom! Week 6
This week we practiced the -ot and -op word families.
Reading and Writing
This week we started our new theme called “Thinking Like a Scientist.” It fits perfectly with our Air and Weather science unit as well! We read a lot about what makes things move this week and made many connections to our science. We read the stories "I Face the Wind" and "On the Move."
Our comprehension strategy is creating images. We work on this strategy all year, especially during our literacy enrichment time. Right now our read aloud is "Clementine"and "The Absent Author." Be sure to ask your kiddo what is happening in our stories! See what they can remember and what descriptive words they are using :)
We started Topic 4 on Monday: Understanding Subtraction. This topic will cover many different strategies on how to subtract. A lot of new vocabulary math words will be introduced! One strategy we have been using is the Part-Part Whole chart. We, as good mathematicians know, always start with the whole (the biggest number), then take away the part we know! Thankfully, we have practiced parts of 6, 7, 8 and 9 and we have 10 fingers to check our answers! :)
Friendly Reminders and Fun News
Taylin was our STAR Student this week!
It was Fire Safety week and the Buffalo Fire Department came to visit with a fire truck! We learned all about the ways to be safe and how to make sure we don't start any fires. We also go to go through the fire truck and see the inside! Super fun!
Ask your kiddo about subtracting with a pirate :) It is a fun song we learned to help us remember what subtraction does! Check it out below!
So great to see and talk with everyone at conferences! I can't wait to see the rest of you on Monday!
The Book Fair will be open at 1:30 on Monday for the kiddo to purchase books! Feel free to send money if you want them to get a book!
