The Skokie Home Scoop
May 31, 2022
Dear Skokie Community,
We hope your family enjoyed a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! Our students had a blast at the Skokie Carnival this past Friday. It was so much fun to see our 6th Graders taking on leadership roles by leading games and activities at their booths. The 5th Graders took the lead with guiding our 4th graders around and sharing information about Skokie with them.
At the event, we distributed our “One Book, One Campus” title for this year: Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. All students and staff at Skokie and Washburne will receive a copy of this book. We are hopeful that students enjoy this title over the summer. Students can read independently, or you may choose to make this a read aloud as a family. We look forward to engaging in an all campus activity related to the book upon return to school next year.
We are looking forward to a great week! Take care,
Betty Weir and Larry Joynt
Skokie Principal and Assistant Principal
Recess Leadership Opportunity
Mrs. Weir, Mr. Joynt, and our SEL Coach, Jenny Knudson, will be developing a Recess Charter for next year with student volunteers on Wednesday, June 1st, from 3:30-4:30pm. If your child is interested and available to attend to help us create a Recess Charter, please fill out this form so we know how many students to expect. Both 5th and 6th graders are invited to attend. Student voice is so important and valuable, and we look forward to collaborating with students on this process.
What is a Charter: The emotional climate of a school affects the community’s well-being and students’ ability to learn. The Charter is a collaborative document that helps schools establish supportive and productive learning environments. It is created by members of the community, outlining how they aspire to treat each other. Together, the community describes how they want to feel at school, the behaviors that foster those feelings, and guidelines for preventing and managing unwanted feelings and conflict. By working together to build the Charter, everyone establishes common goals and holds each other accountable for creating the positive climate they envision.
