Term 4 and Semester 2 Grading
Duluth Public Schools has worked to create a Distance Learning Grading System that will ensure no student is academically disadvantaged based on their ability to participate. We know there is no perfect system and understand there will be some confusion to work through. In these emergency circumstances, the MN Department of Education released guidelines districts must follow. This will be a new way of calculating grades for all of us and we appreciate your patience as we work through it.
If you have questions after reading this article, please start with the classroom teacher. If they are unable to answer your question, please contact your School Counselor or an Assistant Principal.
In summary:
Term 4 Grades
- All Term 4 grades will be recorded as "NM" for No Mark.
Term 4 grades only appear on Report Cards, not Official Transcripts (semester grades only).
The actual grade letter grade from the gradebook may still be used when considering semester grades.
Keep completing packet work and communicating with teachers!
A grade of "NM" does not factor into Grade Point Average calculations (GPA).
Credit is not assigned by the quarter, it is attached to the semester grade.
Semester 2 Grades
All credit bearing courses will receive the letter grade earned for all passing grades.
No F's will be recorded on transcripts.
Failing grades will be recorded as NM or No Mark. As with an F grade, no credit is given for No Mark. The difference between the NM and the F is that the NM won't negatively impact the cumulative GPA.
Semester 2 Grade Possibilities: A, B, C, D, No Mark, Pass
Final grade starts with grade earned in 3rd quarter; work completed during distance learning can help improve that starting grade.
Non-credit bearing courses such as Study Hall and Teacher Helper will be recorded as "Pass" just as would have during traditional learning.
All students will receive a "Pass" for the WIN period for Semester 2.
Choosing a "Pass" or P in place of a B, C, or D. (You cannot select a P if the grade earned was an F.)
Students can elect to switch from an A, B, C, or D to a P for "Pass." With the P credit IS earned but the P does not calculate into the cumulative GPA. We anticipate the use of a P in place of the passing letter grade will be very rare. An example of a student who may consider this is one whose cumulative GPA before this semester was a 4.0 and for some reason they struggled in Term 3. If their work during term 4 wasn't enough to pull the grade to an A, they may consider a Pass so they wouldn't lose their 4.0. However, there can be serious post-high school consequences to selecting a P. In most cases it is more beneficial to take the B.
STUDENTS MUST SPEAK WITH THEIR SCHOOL COUNSELOR TO SELECT “PASS”
Choosing “Pass” can have implications for Post-Secondary Options
NCAA
College Admissions
Scholarships
Students who did not earn credit during second semester (final semester grade of NM or "No Mark") will have the option to recover credit either in the summer or fall as normal.
