Happy New Year! We hope you had a restful Christmas break.

January is a time for reflection of the past year, and setting goals for the new year. Each student and classroom will be reviewing the goals they set in September, and identifying successes since and areas for growth as they move forward.

We had beautiful weather toward the end of Christmas break, but know that true winter weather is likely arriving this month. Thank you for sending your child with the necessary clothing to walk to and from school, and for outside breaks.

JSS is going skating at the arena. The T/Th Kindergarten class will be skating on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, and our M/W Kindergarten class and grade 1 to 5 classes will be going skating on Wednesday, January 25, 2023. Please mark your calendars.

We continue to recognize students who say and do the right thing, especially when no one is looking. Each week, we randomly pick two student Jaguar Cards (submitted into the “Caught in the Matrix” Jaguar Card Bin in the school office) to enjoy a free lunch (made possible by our local eatery/restaurant supporters). Those students have their picture taken and uploaded to the electronic bulletin board in our north entrance lobby. Each Jaguar Card remains in the bin for the entire month, then we start over with an empty bin the next month. 198 JSS students received Jaguar Cards in September, 262 in October, another 102 in November and 96 in December, for a total of 658 Jaguar Cards so far. We are very proud of all our students living the school pledge each day. Stay tuned for our January totals and beyond.

On January 26th Elder Brad Rabbit will join us at school and share Indigenous teachings. We are excited to welcome him and look forward to growing our understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing.

Thank you to …

  • All the students and staff for the amazing Christmas concerts on December 19, 2022.

  • The parents/guardians that continue to help out with our School (Parent) Hot Lunch program.

  • Parents/Guardians who have helped supervise field trips and assist in our classrooms already this year.

All the best in 2023!

Thank you to everyone who purchased popcorn, as well as to all of the volunteers that helped during the concession during the Christmas concerts. We are pleased to report that we received $624 in sales & donations. Thank you to the staff and students for putting on such a wonderful Christmas concert. It was enjoyed by us all!

We have just received $10,300 from the Battle River Community Foundation! This brings our total to $24,200 of grant funding for our playground so far.

We will start our Rolling Hills Coffee Fundraiser at the end of January, stay tuned for more info.

We are looking for volunteers for our Skating Day on Jan.25 to help hand out and replenish hot chocolate and cookies as each group of skaters when they return to the school and also for distribution of Chopped Leaf hot lunch that day.

Text Terra if you can help at any time throughout the day (780)975-6533

Cereal boxes for the Camrose Food Bank

Thank you to all JSS families and friends for donating cereal boxes to our "best seats in the house" at the Christmas concert! Students were excited to watch our circular domino of cereal boxes run in the gym before we sent them to the Camrose Food Bank. We collected 175 boxes. We look forward to trying to break our record at future events!

Scholastic Book Fair - February 1 - 6

Discover the wonderful world of books when the Scholastic Book Fair finally returns in house to JSS. This exciting reading event will take place Feb. 1 - 6. Each classroom will be assigned a specific visiting time to allow students to view and purchase books during regular class hours. A schedule of these times will be sent home with students.

We invite all families to join us at our special Family Night on Wed., Feb. 1 from 3:06 - 6:30 pm. Bring your family and enter the draw for a chance to win $25 of free books!

We will have a debit machine running through the duration of the fair to make payment more convenient. The fair will also be available online, for those of you who cannot attend. The virtual fair https://virtualbookfairs.scholastic.ca/pages/5198462. will run from midnight Feb. 1 to midnight Feb. 8. (Online orders will be delivered to the school on Feb. 10).

This fair would not be possible without the help of parent volunteers. Help is especially needed on Family Night for collecting payments (to make that line run much quicker for all) and also with helping students with their purchases while the fair runs for classroom visits. If you are wishing to volunteer any time during the week please email Mrs. Biletski at sbiletski@brsd.ab.ca.
