Our 26th Annual “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF”
UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, works in 150 countries and territories to help meet children’s basic needs for education, immunization, nutrition, clean water, health care, protection, and emergency relief.
“Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF” Teaches Many Things
Children learn to set goals, make a plan, and carry it out. They also practice plenty of math, reading, writing, and language skills in the process. Perhaps most importantly, children learn a lot about themselves when they help others. While participation is voluntary, we hope that you will encourage your child to help children around the world. Together we can make a very big difference in the lives of many, many children.

First Grade Author Visit!
Dear 1st Grade Families,
We are excited that Caldecott-Honor author and illustrator, Brendan Wenzel, will be stopping by Memorial this fall! Mr. Wenzel has written and illustrated several books including: They All Saw A Cat; Hello, Hello; Life; and his touring title, A Stone Sat Still. On October 24th, our 1st grade students will be attending an assembly to listen to a presentation by our special guest. Mr. Wenzel will discuss his books and describe his story to becoming an author/illustrator. We are all looking forward to his visit.
Order forms will go home with all 1st grade students next week. Families who wish to purchase a signed copy of A Stone Sat Still will be able to do so with this form.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Flannery, Mrs. Warner, or Mrs. Skarvelas.
A Stone sat still with the water, grass, and dirt...
“In this moving companion to the Caldecott Honor–winning They All Saw a Cat, Brendan Wenzel tells the story of a seemingly ordinary stone. But it isn't just a stone—to the animals that use it, it's a resting place, a kitchen, a safe haven...even an entire world. With stunning illustrations in cut paper, pencil, collage, and paint, and soothing rhythms that invite reading aloud, A Stone Sat Still is a gorgeous exploration of perspective, perception, sensory experience, color, size, function, and time, with an underlying environmental message that is timely and poignant. Once again Wenzel shows himself to be a master of the picture book form.”
