Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School Newsletter
April 24-28, 2017
We received our first round of 8th-grade STAAR scores this week: 87% math and 93% reading. Score reports were sent home with each 8th grade student on Friday. Our students did an outstanding job; thanks to the support of our parents and the great job our teachers do every day in the classroom.
Thank you for sending your child to school this past Monday! We had an exceptional attendance rate: 96%! The day after Easter traditionally tends to be a high absentee day, so thank you! I think the students enjoyed the day of shorts as a reward!
This past week close to 300 GT students showcased their yearlong research project with the community. The 6th-grade expo was a museum style where you were able to stop and listen to their explanation. I was thoroughly impressed with the topics and amount of time they spent researching. Our 7th and 8th grade were able to practice their communication skills by presenting them in a classroom to an audience. Our students continue to amaze me with their creative and innovative ideas. Many thanks to our GT teachers: Caron Corum, Katherine Rodriguez, Malena Weil, Andrea Richardson, and Chris Lambert for leading and guiding these kids all year on their projects!
Another impressive display of our students' talents were the NJHS service projects! Over 150 individual service projects were completed that benefited our community in some fashion. Some of the projects benefited: the Fire Department, Haven for Hope, local animal shelters, Children's Hospitals, fellow middle school students, special needs programs, Habitat for Humanity, and even our own custodial staff! Thanks to our NJHS sponsors: Chelsea Quidachay and Tanya Cornejo-Deluna for their leadership in this impactful program on campus.
Congratulations to our parent volunteer of the year: Diana Biasello! We are so thankful for the countless hours Mrs. Biasello dedicates to our teachers and school! We appreciate all you do for us on a daily basis!
8th grade panoramic will be Wednesday, April 26 at 8:30 am.
Reminder: Friday, April 28th is a holiday.

Partner of the Year: Diana Biasello
She is pictured here with our Superintendent, Dr. Brian Woods, at the district Partner of the Year celebration.
Thank you, Mrs. Biasello, for sharing your talents and gifts with the HGMS community! She will move on to support Brandeis High School PTA next year. Parental involvement is something we never take for granted.
It takes a village.
Golf Champions
Another golf season has concluded and once again the Garcia Golf Team has represented themselves and their school with class and dignity while performing at a high level. There were several golfers who received individual awards which led to two more tournament championships! 7th grade award winners were Jasmine Castillo and America Ginithan who tied for fourth place. Nicholas Pineda placed 5th for the boys and Max Cavazos shot an amazing 28 (one under par) for first place breaking a nine-year-old 7th-grade district record leading the Gladiators to the Boys Tournament Championship! Great job, Gladiators!
The eighth-grade girls that earned individual awards were Eliana Arshad, who placed third and Mariana Reyes who won the individual event with a score of 44 which also led to the Tournament Championship. The eighth-grade boys did not win any individual awards but placed third in the team event.
Great job golfers! Thanks to Coach Jerry Alaniz for his work with the team.
GRIT-TY Teachers Wanted!
Does your child have a teacher that embodies the characteristics of Gladiator GRIT? Or perhaps you have a teacher that is building GRIT in his/her students daily? We would like to give this teacher the honor of being named our Gladiator GRIT King or Queen.
Click on the link below to nominate a teacher. Be ready to tell us why this teacher deserves this prestigious title. Every week in April we will crown a new GRIT King or Queen. Will your favorite grit-ty teacher be next?
If this link does not work, email your child's name, the teacher you are nominating, and why you are nominating them to Theresa.Diaz@nisd.net

8th Grade Dance
Students have traditionally "dressed up" for this event, but it is not a requirement.
All attire must meet the campus dress code. If there are questions about your child's attire for the event, please send a picture to one of the administrators and we'd be happy to provide feedback. It is better to be pro-active than not be allowed in the dance for not being in compliance with dress code.
Dance Details:
*May 5, 2017
*6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
*School Cafeteria
*Dinner will be served
*Picture opportunity available- students must pay for photo at the dance. (check, cash, or credit card accepted)
A Pawsitively Purrfect Trip
The HGMS Kindness Club took a wonderful field trip to Animal Care Services on Thursday, April 13, 2017. Animal Care Services educated the students about the importance of pet care, animal safety, adoptions, volunteer opportunities, and the many amenities Animal Care Services offers.
The City of San Antonio Animal Care Services is the largest, open admission, municipal shelter in South Texas. Serving San Antonio residents, ACS resides on a 14-acre campus boasting a variety of programs and services aimed at encouraging responsible pet ownership and compliance in our community. Animal Care Services’ mission is to encourage responsible pet ownership by promoting and protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the residents and pets of San Antonio through education, enforcement, and community partnership.
Prior to the trip, the Kindness Club hosted the campus-wide “Love is a 4-Legged Word” Pet Supply Drive, collecting almost 1,000 items including dog and cat food, pet toys, collars, leashes, bedding, clothing, towels, and more. The club was able to donate all of the items collected to the animals at Animal Care Services.
It was a heartwarming trip to remember that taught our students many valuable lessons. There are many adoptions, foster, volunteer, and donation opportunities to help the pets in our community. For more information on how you can get involved with Animal Care Services, please visit the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services website at http://www.sanantonio.gov/Animal-Care/How-You-Can-Help.
