MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS

Dear Fairview Families,

I hope you all had a nice extended weekend last weekend and that your children enjoyed this quick three-day school week! We’ve had a great week here at Fairview where 3rd graders completed the CogAT, all grade level students completed any remaining start of the year school-wide assessments, and we all enjoyed the beautiful weather during recess and PE. Students are really doing well as a whole settling into their established classroom routines and are following school wide expectations by being safe, respectful, and responsible. On Wednesday, Mrs. Trezise emailed the Fairview Club Sign Up Form to all families. If your child is interested in participating in a club, please read this email carefully and sign up using the link provided in the email. For your convenience, I’ve included the link here as well. If you want more information about each club, consult this document with club descriptions prior to selecting your club preferences. As a reminder, while we hope all interested students will get into a club, this is not guaranteed as it depends on whether or not we have enough space to accommodate everyone’s interests. We will hold a lottery in cases where the interest level exceeds club participant capacity.

In District 57, we take the prevention of bullying very seriously. All K-8 students participate in weekly classroom meetings to build classroom community and provide strategies for students on how to prevent/handle potential bullying situations. This is done, in part, using the Olweus Bully Prevention Program. This curriculum offers an opportunity for students to share their feelings and opinions, to suggest solutions, and to learn to follow the rules and handle bullying situations appropriately. It also builds class community and cohesiveness and recognizes achievements and successes of the class as a whole. As part of our school improvement plan, Fairview teachers are also implementing community building circles as another positive way to build our classroom communities. These will be held periodically throughout the school year to help our students get to know each other better and form connections with one another.

We encourage any student or parent who is aware of a potential bullying situation to report the issue immediately to a staff member. This report will initiate an investigation. Whether or not the issue is found to be bullying, any behavior that does not follow school expectations will be addressed. We want all students to feel safe and comfortable during their time at school, and we are committed to removing barriers that are preventing this for individual students or groups of students. For more resources on this topic, please visit this link. Thank you for taking the time to read through this week’s newsletter. Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Dan Ophus

Fairview Principal

BIRTHDAYS

The Fairview PTO has a wonderful history of giving students a book for their birthday. For the 2021-2022 school year, they are continuing that tradition. If your child is celebrating a birthday this month and interested in a birthday book please have them go onto ClassLink on their chrome book and go to the Birthday Book link or click on the graphic to access the link. Students who are learning from home can pick their birthday book up from the school.

If you are interested in having your son or daughter participate in this group please fill out this form. Forms must be signed and returned to Miss Ciruelas no later than September 13th.

STUDENT SIGN-IN/SIGN-OUT PROCEDURE

The office's procedure for those times when you need to sign your child in or out of school has changed. We maintain an electronic sign-in/sign-out sheet in the office so all you have to do is drop your student off (if arriving late) and we will sign them in and get them down to their class. If you need to sign your child out, ring the doorbell, tell us who you are picking up, and we will send your student out the front door.

STUDENT APPEARANCE CLAUSE

District 57 produces materials about its programs and activities. As a student of the District, a student may be included in video tape or photographs taken at school or district functions. If parents wish to restrict the publication of the student’s face, likeness, voice, or appearance, including the publication of a child’s picture on the District, school, or classroom website, as part of a class or school activity, they must submit a written request annually by September 15 to the building principal.

P.E. CLASS EXCUSALS

Is your child injured or unable to participate fully in gym class due to a medical reason? If your child needs to be excused from gym class or has limited physical capabilities, we require a note. A parent note can be written for up to one week (3 P.E. classes). If the duration is longer than one week, a doctor's note is required. Notes can be submitted to the nurse, Kelly Brunning, at kbrunning@d57.org, faxed to (847) 394-7328, or dropped off at the main office.

FAIRVIEW'S ATTENDANCE LINE

Please make note that our attendance line phone number is the school's general phone number, 847-394-7320 and then press"1." The attendance line is available 24/7 for your convenience.

KEEP THE FRONT OFFICE INFORMED

When emailing your student's teacher regarding vacation plans, illness, doctor appointments, etc., please include the front office staff in your communication.

Also, please contact Fairview School’s office if your home/cell phone number, emergency contact numbers, or email address have changed.

If you have moved, please immediately contact the front office so we can update your student's records.

BUS BULLETIN

Throughout the year buses may be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g., vehicular congestion; train traffic, weather, mechanical issues, etc.). The district has been using Bus Bulletin for several years now and is confident that this online notification system is the best way to inform parents should the need arise. Click on the bus for more information and to register.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING EVACUATION PROCEDURES

PLEASE READ THIS AS IT INFORMS YOU WHERE FAIRVIEW'S RELOCATION SITE IS IF WE NEEDED TO EVACUATE OUR BUILDING IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY
