March 2016
A message from your Principal
Can you believe it, Spring Break is upon us!!! The 3rd marking period is halfway over and Pride Week 2016 has begun. The student body is fully engaged in this annual building wide event as the classes battle to see who has the most school spirit. For the first time in Pride Week history, all grade levels will be participating in a building wide Lip Dub Video that will showcase students and staff at Medford.
Interim grade reports have been updated in the Genesis Parent Portal as we look to address any academic concerns and end the marking period on a positive note. Please be sure to contact your child’s counselor if you have any questions or concerns regarding grades or next year course selections.
April will bring several events and activities to the Medford campus as we head into spring. As always, review the Medford campus calendar on our main page to see a complete list.

Congratulations Boys and Girls!
This year our boys basketball team had a tremendous season. They finished with an overall record of 16-14 and played a very tough schedule. The challenging schedule ended up paying off in the long run because our team ended up advancing all the way to the Group II Sectional Final in the New Jersey State Playoffs. Unfortunately, our Jags didn’t pull it out but the game was competitive, and our boys played hard the entire game. One of our boys basketball players, Shakwel Vincent, finished with a total of 1,199 career points and 212 career 3 pointers. Congratulations to our boys basketball team. Some of our student-athletes from other sports teams were selected and/or nominated to specific teams.

2016-2017 Course Selections
Course Selections for the 2016-17 school year will take place during the month of April. Please review your son or daughter’s courses for next year and contact their counselor with any questions. In most situations, counselors suggest that students go for the challenge, but do not overwhelm themselves to the point where coursework suffers, and they are unable to maintain satisfactory grades. So, plan ahead. When it comes to academics, create a tentative sequence of courses that will develop in scope and depth over one's time in high school. At the same time, determine whether the schedule of courses for the coming school year considers all the different expectations of time; including class and co‐curricular demands, voluntary service, sports and work expectations.
FAFSA
In order to apply for financial aid, most colleges and universities require the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) which should be submitted as soon after January 1, 2016 as possible. Since each college has a different deadline for financial aid, you are encouraged to submit our form online for more rapid response. If you do not have all your information available, you can estimate your income based on last year’s figures and update your submission when the form is returned to you for verification. The website is https://fafsa.ed.gov/.
PARCC Testing
All students who are currently enrolled in English I, English II, or English III will take the Proficiency Based Assessment in English Language Arts. All students who are currently enrolled in Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II will take the Performance‐Based Assessment in Mathematics. Students will begin testing in the April. CTE Spotlight: Auto Collision Repair Technology, by Danielle Hartman
Cody’s enthusiasm for his career is evident. With pride, he describes the '81 El Camino, dark blue, which he just finished restoring with his father, a mechanic by trade. Cody did a full paint job, including some interior work. His father assisted with mechanical repairs. Cody also restored a '55 Pontiac Chieftain, green with a white top, for a teacher at BCIT. The end product, and seeing what can be accomplished with time and hard work, is what keeps Cody captivated with the process of restoring classic cars.
“We can make a paint job look better than factory,” Cody explains, “We learn how to do everything from mixing and applying paint to welding, door panels, and window mechanisms.” The multifaceted skills students learn in this career major will assist them in gaining employment in a number of areas, including auto body, refinishing, custom airbrush graphic design, and auto body materials representative. Students can also earn a number of ASE certifications before graduating, such as structural, non-structural, painting, and refinishing. These certifications will provide students with leverage when seeking employment.
Chris chimes in that he loves the hands-on nature of his career. While it is interesting to read about auto collision, it is much more fun to actually do body work, and he revels in the time spent on practical applications. Cody adds that Jaws focuses on the whole student, not just skills, but also on vocabulary, literacy, math, and any other needs the students have.
Students in Auto Collision at BCIT know they play a valuable role in the school and community. The shop regularly services township and teacher vehicles. This year, they fixed the school snowplow. Even classmates take advantage of the skills these students have to offer, bringing them cars to paint and polish, knowing that when they get them back, they’ll be better than new.
Academy for Performing Arts welcomed new instruments and technology on our Medford campus.
