This week we read the story The Goat In the Rug. This text was a nonfiction narrative told from the perspective of a goat whose owner is a Navajo weaver. We focused on drawing conclusions and recounting the sequence of events. You should ask your child about all the steps to making a rug - it is a very long process!

We also focused our language skills on root words, prefixes, and suffixes. A root word is a word that can stand alone or has meaning by itself. I made this handy chart to remind us of common 2nd grade prefixes and suffixes that add meaning to root words.

Students finished working on their opinion writing about pop machines in the cafeteria this week. Your child conferenced with me and with other friends to edit their papers. They went home with your child today - I hope you enjoy them as much as I did! Next week we will begin another opinion writing about making the earth a better place. We have been talking a lot this month about Earth Day and protecting the environment and will continue to expand on that.

Today, we took our Chapter 8 measurement assessment over inches, yards, and feet. Those tests should be coming home with your child early next week. Chapter 9 continues with our discussion of measurement. This chapter will focus on using centimeters and meters. Students will also solve problems about adding and subtracting lengths.

Science & Social Studies

This week we finished up our unit on Force, Motion & Magnetism. The unit test will be coming home early next week. Thank you for allowing your child to bring in something magnetic to share. They really enjoyed finding magnetic things around our classroom and in your homes.

Our next unit will be focused on geography. Your student will be learning about continents, maps, and different landforms on the Earth over the next couple of weeks.

Appropriate Clothing

As the weather starts to warm up from a very cold winter, please note that we are sometimes outside in the mornings. Although a high temperature might be 75, the morning can be noticeably cooler. Our building temperature can also feel chilly with the air conditioner running. To be prepared, it would be awesome if you could send your child to school with a light jacket or sweatshirt each day. They are more than welcome to leave them at school in their cubbies. Many of the students in our class have complained about the temperature outside being cooler than they thought or our classroom being cold when they are wearing short sleeves and shorts. Let me know if you have any questions :)

Your child should wear comfy clothes and tennis shoes because this is a team building field trip, including some physical activity. They will also need a sack lunch with a drink for our lunch in the park.
