After School Pick Up Alert
After School Dismissal Procedures…I would like to review with all our families the expectations for dismissal procedures out front. It is important that these procedures are followed to help reduce
pick-up time, as well as limit the amount of time cars must line up on Paddock Road.
· The parking stalls on the North end of the drive are to be utilized as a pickup lane after 3:00pm.
Please do not leave cars unattended when picking up students in these spots.
· If a pick-up spot designated by cones is open, please pull up to the farthest available spot.
· Please be courteous to one another and mindful of cars pulling out of pick-up spots.

Counselor Corner
In classroom counseling this quarter, K-4th grade students will be learning from our district bullying curriculum. Students in 5th-6th grade will be learning from our district career curriculum.
Kindergarten– Our objectives are to help students begin to understand their behavior choices (words and actions) as well as the consequences and effects of their choices.
1st – 4th grade – Our objectives are to provide additional, specific information for students on bullying behaviors and interventions. Students will learn the definition of bullying, the difference between bullying and conflict, the roles in a bullying situation as well as problem solving strategies to help them if they encounter a bullying situation.
5th -6th grade – Our objectives are to get students looking towards the future and identify personal skills and interests in relation to possible careers. Students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of careers that are based on their personality and interests.

Kids Heart Challenge
Westside Schools
We are kicking off our Kids Heart Challenge program (formerly Jump Rope for Heart) in January. We are thrilled to participate as we work together to raise money for the American Heart Association and learn how nutrition and being active can help us live longer, healthier lives.
Through the Kids Heart Challenge, we are going to talk about three things:
1. Habits to keep our hearts healthy
2. How we can help others
3. Encourage everyone to take the challenge to adopt one of three healthy habits
This year we are excited to welcome the Heart Heroes to our school. Over the next few weeks, the characters will share important messages about keeping their heart healthy, building self-confidence and helping others. The first step is getting your student registered and taking a challenge. When they register, they will receive their free wristband and join the Heart Heroes!!! If we can get 50% of our students registered to take the challenge our school will receive $500.00 in PE equipment!!!
1. Go to www.heart.org/khc register your student for our Kids Heart Challenge
2. Choose your challenge
a. MOVE MORE
b. BE KIND
c. BE READY
3. Earn your free glow-in-the-dark Heart Hero wristband
4. Download the Kids Heart Challenge app to bring the wristband and any Heart Heroes to life.
Your student can earn the Heart Hero characters and additional gifts by asking friends and family to make donations in the support of the American Heart Association.
Thank you so much for supporting our school and the American Heart Association. Together we can do this!
Attendance Alert
Studies show that chronic absenteeism is a red alert that students are headed for academic trouble and eventually for dropping out of high school. Chronic absenteeism: students who miss a total of 18 days of the entire school year.
Fact: Only 17 % of students absent 10% or more of the school year in Kindergarten and 1st grade can read at grade level after the 3rd grade.
Partner with us in increasing attendance and bring your child one step closer to realizing their UNLIMITED potential!
Here are some helpful tips you can use to help your child come to school on time every day.
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, the school counselor, or other parents for advice on how to make him/her feel comfortable.
- Develop some backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent.
- Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
