ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS
ENRICHMENT CLASSES POSTPONED
Dear IHS families,
We have a lot of good news and some TEMPORARY bad news.
First: The good news. I am elated at the growth we have seen since our humble beginnings in 2012. That first year, we served 30 students in our sports programs. Last year just under 300 kids participated in not only sports, but enrichment classes, fine arts programs, student council, etc. It has been a tremendous ride and I have been blessed to have worked with so many tremendous people!
On the other hand, with growth comes challenges. When the school that had been graciously hosting our classes, needed to reclaim more space for their own programs, we were forced to scale back our enrichment schedule. Last semester we pushed forward, but had to turn away some because of these limitations. On the athletic side, we’ve gone from three teams the first year to 11 teams of different ages, genders and sports last year. While the growth is exciting, it comes with a bigger price tag, not only in terms of money, but time, effort, coordinating, problem solving, scheduling, etc.
Proudly, we have remained a completely 100% volunteer organization with no paid employees. (Of course we are also an organization with no facilities of our own). The demand for practice fields, courts and tracks, classroom space, recreation facilities for holding our dances, socials, plays, concerts, etc. have continued to grow, as have the costs of renting.
While there were several other challenges influencing our decisions, the overriding issue that we’ve been grappling with is: “How do we keep up with the demand, while maintaining quality programs that fulfill our mission: To assist homeschool families?”
Lately we have been inundated with emails, phone calls, text messages, etc. asking when enrichment classes will start up again, and what classes will be offered. I apologize that we have not had good answers. Please know that it isn’t because we haven’t been trying.
After much effort, discussion, homework and prayer, we came to the decision that rather than rent sub-par facilities, to host scaled back programs, we will instead briefly "circle the wagons" while we redouble our efforts.
Simply put, in order to ensure that IHS is around for a very long time, and to protect the quality of our programs, we will be suspending the Winter 2016 enrichment classes and not field a baseball team this spring. We know that this will be disappointing for those who were planning to participate in these programs, and we are sorry for the inconvenience.
However, every other program and activity already scheduled will continue as normal. Our winter party (January 29th), Basketball, Cheer, student council, yearbook, all of our scheduled socials and events (Spring Formal, graduation, the awards banquet, 6th Annual Independence Day Celebration & Fireworks Show, etc.) and Track & Field will continue as planned.
In the meantime, we are devoting our best efforts to gear up for an incredible 2016-17 school year with a full slate of enrichment classes, a slew of sports programs, a better fine arts program, etc. We think you are going to love the changes!
It is going to take some major resources in time, money, and effort to pull off what we are planning to accomplish. If you are interested in helping, please let me know. We’d love the help.
Thanks for being a part of IHS. It is a pleasure to serve homeschool families and we will continue to do so for many years to come.
All the best!

NOTES: This is the place we stayed last year. It has a fun indoor pool area, lots of open space for gathering, Free breakfast, etc.
This hotel is about a 30 minute drive from most gyms we will play in. However everyone loved this location and situation better than anything we could find in McPherson.
Some families choose to stay over on Saturday night rather than come home late after the game. If you decide to do this, be sure to make the appropriate reservation with the hotel.
If you have more questions please call Christy Mitchell (785) 760-4947
