What is Media

Mikey Chung

Media is the main means of mass communication regarded collectively, which is the textbook definition of media. To me however, media is a platform in which you can express yourself, some for the better others for worse, and reach out and connect with family and friends in ways you have never been able to. Media can also mean different things such as the TMZ, which keep you updated on current news going around with celebrities. With media there has never been a faster way to spread news or connect with others on a global scale, in mere seconds thousands of people can have an update about a certain celebrity or current event happening anywhere in the world. This however, can also be one of the downfalls of media. Because media allows for information to spread any mistakes you may have caused that is posted on the media can literally ruin people’s lives. Such as on social media platforms whether it is posting indecent pictures of others, cyber bullying, etc. those actions can lead to prison, expulsion from school or worst of all someone’s death. For the most part however media is one of the most important and most used tools in today’s society. With only a touch of a button the whole world is at your fingertips. I believe media literacy is a way of teaching students on how to make full use of using media to better help them in learning. Instead of teachers handing out papers to students, now students can access everything they need to online. There are enormous amounts of databases online in which students can access in an instant instead of having through flip through hundreds of pages in a textbook. Media today is one of the most important and most used aspects of one’s life.

Audi 2014 Big Game Commercial - Doberhuahua

Audi in the commercial, Doberhuahua, informs that Audi's new car does not compromise for luxury. Audi supports its information by trying to compromise between a chihuahua and doberman, leading to disaster and complete chaos. The author's purpose is to showcase how the new Audi vehicle does not compromise for luxury in order to make viewers of the commercial want to buy the vehicle. The author writes in a humorous tone for the Superbowl commercial audience.

Senioritis originated from the state of Georgia, specifically in Gwinnette County. Senioritis has spread in an alarming rate reaching as far as Africa and some European countries.

Symptoms of this horrific disease consist of excessive sleeping, hallucinations of school being over, lack of responsibilities, and in some cases the inability to leave ones room on school days (skipping). Senioritis has claimed 60% of seniors in the U.S. alone, worldwide the number is currently unknown, but believed to be in the millions.

There is no known cure as of yet. "I wake up at 12 PM and go to school not to attend class but flirt with girls" said Jake Carthy a Senioritis carrier. Senioritis a growing problem has to be stopped, if not every teenager in the world may succumb to this horrible disease.

Bush saves the day

September 11, 2001, what could have been the most horrific terrorist act in the United States history was avoided due to the president of the United States George W. Bush, the professionalism of American airlines, and the Military sent on the rescue mission. On September 11, 2001, at 8:45 a.m. on a clear Tuesday morning, an American Airlines Boarding 767 people loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel, along with 3 other planes were boarded with Islamic extremist group Al-Qaeda. The founder and leader of this terrorist group was Osama Bin Laden. Under his leadership the terrorist boarding the plane were to have hijacked the plane and perform suicide bombings on the World Trade Center and United States Pentagon. This plan of Osama’s would have worked if it not have been for the swift actions of George Bush and the officials of American Airlines.

Three of the four planes were already boarded by the terrorist and were ready to take off, however the terrorist members boarding the forth plane were stopped and searched due to suspicious actions and having box cutters in their luggage. Along with the box cutters airport security also found items used to make explosives in their luggage. This was enough evidence to interrogate the individuals and thoroughly search their persons in which a piece of paper with Islamic writing was found. The paper was sent to a translator in which details of the terrorist attack was found on the piece of paper. This information was immediately sent to government and military officials, upon which it was confirmed that the targets of the terrorist were the Pentagon and World Trade Center and that there were three other planes headed for those targets.

What was not known however was exactly which planes were the ones occupied by the terrorist and if those planes had already departed or not. President Bush knew one thing for certain and that was that time was not on their side. President Bush immediately ordered all flights of American airlines to be stopped immediately and lock down of all persons inside the airport and planes. He also ordered to evacuate all persons inside the World Trade Center buildings and Pentagon to a safe location. Military, local law enforcement, as well as airport security were conducting swift searches among the planes ready for departure as well as using canine units to search for scents of anything prohibited such as drugs and explosives. The terrorist realizing something was wrong tried hijacking the planes while it was still grounded but realized it was no uses since the roads were blocked stopping the planes from going anywhere. Instead the terrorist now decided to take every passenger in the plane hostage and threatened to detonate a bomb that would kill everyone inside and around the airplanes, unless they were allowed to escape unharmed.

President Bush now had a decision to make, either send in elite military squads to rescue the hostages and apprehend or kill the terrorist or to negotiate with them. President Bush however knew that negotiating with terrorist was futile and decided to send the squads in for rescue. The mission was successful and there were no casualties except for the terrorist who were gunned down at sight. Because of the swift actions taken by the president and those supporting him what could have been one of the most tragic events in United States history was avoided. President Bush was honored as a hero and one of the best presidents in United States history.

I chose 9/11 as my event of history to rewrite because it was one of the most significant events in U.S. history and is a modern event happening only 13 years ago.

Immortal Technique - The 4th Branch - Revolutionary Vol 2 - NEW Video

The 4th Branch of Government otherwise known as Big Brother

For my song I chose Immortal Technique's 4th branch of government. I chose this song because it relates to 1984 by showcasing how our world and government is corrupt. This song uses real life examples which directly relates to examples in 1984. Such as this verse from Immortal Techniques 4th Branch of Government “It's like MK-ULTRA, controllin' your brain Suggestive thinking, causing your perspective to change”, this relates to 1984 because of the fact that big brother causes the people in Oceania's views to change by constantly putting messages through their head. In 1984 human rights are thrown out of the window and for even having a thought about going against big brother could lead up to imprisonment or “Joy Camp”, this line from 4th branch of government directly relates to that, “Human rights violations, we continue the saga...And on top of that, you still wanna take me to prison Just cause I won't trade humanity for patriotism”. Even Winston and Immortal Technique have similarities in which both seek to abolish corrupt government in any way that they can.

The new age is upon us

And yet the past refuses to rest in its shallow grave

For those who hide behind the false image of the Son of man

Shall stand before God

It has begun

The beginning of the end

The voice of racism preachin' the gospel is devilish

A fake church called the prophet Muhammad a terrorist

Forgetting God is not a religion, but a spiritual bond

And Jesus is the most quoted prophet in the Qu'ran

They bombed innocent people, tryin' to murder Saddam

When you gave him those chemical weapons to go to war with Iran

This is the information that they hold back from Peter Jennings

Cause Condoleeza Rice is just a new age Sally Hemmings

I break it down with critical language and spiritual anguish

The Judas I hang with, the guilt of betraying Christ

You murdered and stole his religion, and painting him white

Translated in psychologically tainted philosophy

Conservative political right wing, ideology

Glued together sloppily, the blasphemy of a nation

Got my back to the wall, cause I'm facin' assassination

Guantanamo Bay, federal incarceration

How could this be, the land of the free, home of the brave

Indigenous holocaust and the home of the slaves

Corporate America, dancin' offbeat to the rhythm

You really think this country, never sponsored terrorism

Human rights violations, we continue the saga

El Savador and the contras in Nicaragua

And on top of that, you still wanna take me to prison

Just cause I won't trade humanity for patriotism

It's like MK-ULTRA, controllin' your brain

Suggestive thinking, causing your perspective to change

They wanna rearrange the whole point of view of the ghetto

The fourth branch of the government, want us to settle

A bandana full of glittering, generality

Fightin' for freedom and fightin' terror, but what's reality

Read about the history of the place that we live in

And stop letting corporate news tell lies to your children

Flow like the blood of Abraham through the Jews and the AraAnnotatebs

Broken apart like a woman's heart, abused in a marriage

The brink of holy war, bottled up, like a miscarriage

Embedded correspondents don't tell the source of the tension

And they refuse to even mention, European intervention

Or the massacres in Jenin, the innocent screams

U.S. manufactured missles, and M-16's

Weapon contracts and corrupted American dreams

Media censorship, blocking out the video screens

A continent of oil kingdoms, bought for a bargain

Democracy is just a word, when the people are starvin'

The average citizen, made to be, blind to the reason

A desert full of genocide, where the bodies are freezin'

And the world doesn't believe that you fightin' for freedom

Cause you f***** the Middle East, and gave birth to a demon

It's open season with the CIA, buggin' my crib

Trapped in a ghetto region like a Palestinian kid

Where nobody gives a f*** whether you die or you live

I'm tryin' to give the truth, and I know the price is my life

But when I'm gone they'll sing a song about Immortal Technique

Who beheaded the President, and the princes and sheiks

You don't give a f*** about us, I can see through your facade

Like a fallen angel standing in the presence of God

B**** n***** scared of the truth, when it looks at you hard

Before second semester started I thought Media Literacy was going to be another monotonous Language Arts class in which I don’t gain any knowledge to help me in the future. This class however is unlike any other class I have taken. Instead of reading tedious stories such as “Julius Caesar” or “Romeo and Juliet” in which I gain no helpful knowledge to help better myself in the future, I have actually gained knowledge from reading books such as “1984” and relating to our own world. This class taught me to be more aware of the world and how to better prepare myself for the world outside of high school. Media Literacy is one of the few classes in which I will actually remember our discussions and advice in which I will most definitely use in the real world. I especially enjoyed the fact that this class is not like any other Language Arts class, in which we were expected to know how to write and not being taught how to write the same way every year like other classes. Unlike other classes when we had discussions we talked about current events and what’s going around the world when relating to text we read. The most impact Media Literacy had on me however, was the one and only ZOPF! In all seriousness Coach Zopf you’re one of the few teachers that actually made students including myself have to work for our grades and I believe that if I needed advice or help I could rely on you to discuss them. There is not really much to change for the class to be better, as the saying goes “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” Although I have not become a victim to this I feel for the people who have to stand up for sleeping. PLEASE STOP lol peace out girl scout.
