Ham-Par Happenings

Mrs. Hasse's Spotlight
A fabulous way to end our second month of school is our Student-Led Conferences! It is great seeing students lead the way in their learning. For me, this is always a part of best practice. It is evident that students are evolving in "what works" in education. Yes, much of the "old" still exists but yet has evolved into something new, and even more powerful! Students today are requiring something more....something different! It is certain that one is a part of the reflection and goal-setting it becomes all more personable.
Keep up your efforts HP Bulldogs as you now have reflected on where you are currently at and set some goals for yourself with the help of your coaches: both parents & teachers! #seauslead
Shifting gears a bit, I recently read information that really impacted me as both an educator and mom. I have to admit I believe the connection that was made was due to my resonation in seeing EVERYONE in this fast-paced life. Myself included, I see families hustling here and there and losing sight of the moment. The here and now is so critical and I really need to share and continue to spread this news. Be in the here and now and let's stay there. I see the impact it is having on lives and that certainly spills into the classroom even onto our littlest learners. Today, there is no shortage of extraordinary pressure which can lead to poor health and concentration. In short, it's impacting us all.
Here are somethings that can support or reduce your stress levels. In doing so for everyone in your "circle of control" you will improve your self and your children as well!
Mind
- Accept the things that you cannot control. Being impatient, cincial, or pessimistic can trigger stress.
- Don't be aggressive. Assert your beliefs instead without being defensive or angry.
- Make a list of things you're grateful for both big and small. Review the list when you are experiencing stress.
- Set time limits and learn to say "no".
- Talk to friends and family. Studies show social support is critical when it comes to maintaining your mental and physical health.
Body
- Sharpen the saw and exercise regularly. Try to maintain moderate activity three to four times per week.
- Make time for sleep. Students need 10-12 hours and adults need 7-8 hours each night!
- Avoid processed, sugar and fatty foods. These foods can trigger body reactions and they offer little to no nutritional value.
- Try forest bathing which is simply a Japanese practice of walking in the woods. Be in the moment and use all of your senses. This can boost the immune system and lower blood pressure.
- Try calming strategies! HP students have been learning these the last few years in effort to be proactive and calm when feeling stressed.
Taking these suggestions can improve your overall performance all around for both you and your student!

Remember the day of the Leadership Run? It is an important event in the school year. There was DJ Zac Attack who played juicy tunes. We were excited because DJ Zac signed some of our shirts during the Leadership Run! There were many stations to stop at during the Leadership Run. There was a yoga station. There was a moving wiggle station. Who could forget the noodle racing? The best thing was the giant blow up bulldog we got to run through at the end of the lap that you finished. The goal was to keep moving the entire time a classroom was scheduled. After, DJ Zac Attack called us to take a picture in the bulldog. When we got called up to the blacktop there was apples and water there for us. The apples were crisp and juicy. We also got water. We gulped it down even though it was cold, we were still hot from running. The Leadership Run was a blast for everyone who came and participated in the run. We hope to have as much fun as we did this year at next year’s Leadership Run.

Our Science Olympiad Team will start-up in December
Student Scientists in 3rd, 4th or 5th grade, and their parents are invited to attend the Science Olympiad Open House on Tuesday, December 4, at 6:30pm, in the cafeteria, to learn about joining our team. The program is an academic competition of 16 events related to science concepts, knowledge, processes, and applications. Students and parent-coaches will practice weekly from January through May, with 2 competitive tournaments on March 23 and May 18, 2019.
At the December 4th Open House students and parents will be able to explore the 16 event topics and learn more about Ham-Par's program, which continues to grow in strength and enthusiasm each year.
