From the Music Department
We will be using iPads to reinforce what we have learned with rhythms this year using a game called Rhythm Cat. The game assesses students’ playing of rhythm patterns, and automatically moves on to the next level when the student is ready for a more challenging rhythm pattern (the students have their own iPad to use for this activity). The game uses levels of rhythm understanding starting with the most basic note values that our Kindergartners have learned, and goes all the way up to some advanced rhythm patterns that challenge our 5th graders.
In kindergarten, we will also have an introduction to instrument families, and will identify a few of the most common instruments from the instrument families.
1st graders will also learn about instruments and their families, and will learn to identify a few more instruments than they did last year in Kindergarten. In addition, we will learn some multicultural folk songs and dances.
2nd graders will continue expanding upon their knowledge of instruments and their families. They will be able to identify not only by picture, but by sound of the instruments as well. We can tell why an instrument would be in a specific family and a little bit about some of the history of the instruments.
3rd grade gets their first chance to try out an instrument for instrumental music next year! The Lincoln and Emerson orchestra will be coming to let the students try out string instruments for next year. When they are in 4th grade, students will be able to pick one of the following to play outside of music class: violin, viola, cello, and string bass. Look for information to come home!
4th grade will be getting an opportunity to expand their instrumental music repertoire and can choose to play a band instrument. The Lincoln and Emerson band will be here to allow the students to pick a wind instrument to play, or join the percussion family if they have one year of piano background. Information will be coming home for this as well.
5th grade is coming to an end and as they look forward to end of year celebrations, we will be learning a fun song where we include every student. It takes a lot of hard work, but we know these students can pull it off! It certainly has been an exciting year and we love celebrating the memories we have made!
