Please pay close attention to the information below. We will be sending paper copies of the Opt-In form home as well.

Human Sexuality instruction develops and strengthens the ability of students to make conscious, healthy, and respectful choices regarding dating/romantic relationships, personal safety, anatomy and physiology, puberty and adolescent development, pregnancy and reproduction, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. The district’s Human Sexuality and Responsibility (HSR) education program has been established to provide information and skill development for students in kindergarten through grade 12 so that they may reach their highest potential for physical, emotional, mental and social health.

The HSR curriculum content will be delivered in a developmentally and age-appropriate manner and will include the most current and scientifically accurate information. The content of the curriculum is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Health Education, with supplemental content established by the National Sex Education Standards that have been approved by the Board.

Content shall include information regarding healthy and unhealthy dating/romantic relationships, online and personal safety (including the prevention of child abuse, family and dating violence and sex trafficking), anatomy and physiology, puberty and adolescent development, pregnancy and reproduction, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. All content shall be inclusive of all students, regardless of gender expression, gender identity, sexual orientation, sexual experience, pregnancy, parenting status, or family structure. HSR lessons are taught to those students in grades K-12 whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) have provided written permission by way of the opt-in or permission letter. This letter will be sent home this week, prior to the beginning of the HSR unit.

To ensure that students receive quality HSR instruction, all teachers received training on the skills needed for and best practices related to navigating complex concepts and questions. Prior to HSR program implementation, I conducted an orientation session for parents and guardians. The purpose of the session was to detail the implementation of the HSR program and the permission process. St. Elmo's Orientation Session was Tuesday, October 29, 2022, @ 8:00am.

We've had a wonderful lift-off to the school year and we are so proud of all of our students, families, and staff for being so ready to get Back to Our Future!

We have a PTA Meeting tonight from 5:30pm - 6:30pm in the cafeteria. Right after the PTA meeting there will be a short performance by our awesome PK-3 students! Come and meet the new PTA Officers and enjoy our youngest learners!

Thank you for making the arrangements to have our students at school no later than 7:45am every morning. There were way less tardies today (Oct. 6) than the two previous days. With limited instructional minutes this year due to having PE every day, it's super important that we start the learning day promptly at 7:45am. This includes eating breakfast.

Please pay attention to the valuable resources offered at Foundation Communities and to the information relayed concerning Prime Time Fall Programming and don't forget that Friday, Oct. 7 is early release for all students at 1:30pm. We have confirmed that Sierra Vista and Sierra Ridge will be picking students up at 1:30pm from St. Elmo. KinderCare will also be picking them up at 1:30pm as well.

Grateful to be the lead learner in such a wonderful community!

¡Hemos tenido un despegue maravilloso para el año escolar y estamos muy orgullosos de todos nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal por estar tan listos para regresar a nuestro futuro!

St. Elmo's Prime Time After School Enrichment Program will begin the week of Oct. 17 (the week after next). Please be on the lookout for a flyer sent home with the class schedule and descriptions. This flyer will also include a link for registration. Families will have from Friday, Oct. 7 - Monday Oct. 10 to decide what classes they'd like to register for. Spots are limited and priority will be given to students who do not already attend Sierra Vista or Sierra Ridge After School Programming. A lottery system will be used when necessary.

The St. Elmo Campus Advisory Council meets monthly. Council members meet to promote excellence in education for all our students through broad-based representation. Our CAC provides valuable input to Mr. McCormack, who ultimately has decision-making responsibility for St. Elmo.

Week one was wonderful! It is so great to see all of our Mighty Mustangs back on our campus, fired up and ready to learn!

Thank you for continuing to ensure that your student arrives at St. Elmo before 7:45am every day. We have noticed we already have fewer tardies than last year. REMEMBER, we open our doors at 7:00am for those who'd like to drop their student off earlier. A student is late if they haven't walked through the front doors by 7:45am. Please plan ahead and get your Mighty Mustang to school on time.

On Mondays, we have a Morning Assembly for grades 1-5. This assembly starts at 7:35am, so if you can, please try and get your student to school by 7:35 on Mondays. Students will not be counted tardy until after 7:45am.

Please check the upcoming dates below for important events, like Coffee with the Principal and our 2 separate nights for Back to School Night.

We define social and emotional learning (SEL) as an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.

SEL advances educational equity and excellence through authentic school-family-community partnerships to establish learning environments and experiences that feature trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation. SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities.

SEL makes a difference. We know this from the research, which demonstrates that an education that promotes SEL has a positive impact on a wide range of outcomes, including academic performance, healthy relationships, mental wellness, and more.

At St. Elmo, SEL is not just a program we DO, it is something we ARE. We know that all learning is social, emotional, and cultural. We also know that trusting relationships are an on-ramp for teaching and learning. Two of the ways we incorporate morning SEL every day are through Morning Meetings and Check-In Circles related to specific themes. With this in mind, we offer these themes in August and September to help support our Austin ISD staff, students, and families.

The structure of our morning meetings is based on Responsive Classrooms Morning Meetings:

• Greeting: Students and teachers greet one another by name.

• Sharing: Students share information about important events in their lives. Listeners often offer empathetic comments or ask clarifying questions.

• Group Activity: Everyone participates in a brief, lively activity that fosters group cohesion and helps students practice social and academic skills (for example, reciting a poem, dancing, singing, or playing a game).

  • Choosing activities highlights the teacher’s role as a balance keeper. Consider the type of activity for that particular day or group of students: For example, down regulating activities (yoga stretches, mindful breathing) and up regulating activities (clapping names, high energy movement activity)

• Morning Message: Students read and interact with a short message that’s written by their teacher.. This message is written daily to establish and routine of welcome and engagement for the day ahead.

Check-in circles create a sense of belonging by building connections that strengthen the class community. These connections allow students to build the neural pathways between their downstairs brain and their upstairs brain. These strengthened pathways lead to emotional regulation, which primes students for the day’s rigorous learning.
