The Lance
May 18-22
The mission of Lakeshore Middle School is to promote collaboration between educators, students, and families to foster engaged learners and active and compassionate
members of their community.
Reflections from Mr. Swegles
Thank you, LMS families, for all that you have done during our closure. I know that everyone is doing the best they can with the time and resources they have available. From supporting your student, sending words of affirmation to staff, and supporting our community, it is all seen and appreciated. When there is time come June, it is my hope to we'll have time to reflect on all that we have learned during this time. I have to believe that we'll come out better on the other side of this. In the meantime, thank you for all that you have done and will continue to do these remaining weeks. We got this!
Attention 8th grade parents: Update May 18
If your child, or you, wish to turn in time capsule documents now, you may do so by placing them in the tub outside the front doors of the middle school. There are envelopes in the tub if you need one. This is such a unique opportunity to reflect and record our thoughts that we want to make sure you have the opportunity to do that now and turn it in. There will still be an opportunity to turn it in, come fall, should you chose.
The students in the 8th grade Language Arts classes are creating a personal time capsule that will be delivered to them in May of their senior year. Would you like to surprise your child with a letter in the time capsule? Letters may be written by parents, grandparents, siblings, etc. The content of the letter is up to you, but the students will reflect on the following categories in their writing: me, my world, people in my life, my past, what I do, my future. You can mail your letter to Lakeshore Middle School with attention to Laura Veldman. Please be sure to include your student’s first and last name in the letter. This is an optional activity to enrich the project, but we know your child will appreciate reading your writing. The letter should be mailed to LMS by the time school starts next fall. Thank you for your cooperation in this project.
Course Scheduling (updated May 18)
All current 6th and 7th-grade students were sent an email last Thursday that had yet to fill out their elective form. Mrs. Weaver and Mrs. Pallett are working on schedules this week and its important students have their input. Please, inquire with your child to ensure they have done completed their Google Form.
The class of 2025 (7th grade) was sent a digital application for potential placement into Language 8+ for the 2020-21 school year. Discuss with them their desire or intent to apply for the course. There is a written response that they will need to spend some time on and, if accepted, there is a summer work that will be required. This was due today.

Upcoming Dates and Events
Belonging PIck up and Drop Off:
Ideally, we want to plan an event where we can provide students their belongings while at the same time be prepared for students to return their school-issued materials that are being returned as well. Please, be patient as we create that plan, but nothing will occur prior to May 28 due to the stay at home order.
The Positivity Project: Extended Calendar
These last three weeks we'll be focusing on a character strength that supports our social-emotional learning. This week, gratitude is our focus. Jeff Bryan, co-founder and executive director of P2 writes, "Gratitude is sometimes resisted, especially in more self-sufficient and independent cultures, due to not wanting to experience a sense of indebtedness. However, gratitude is less about feeling indebted and more about being aware of the consideration, kindness, and generosity of others. It’s also important to note that gratitude is not about ignoring the negative aspects of life; it’s simply being aware of and thankful for what is good."
Have conversations with your students and encourage them to find the good in the day and be sure to share yours.
