Message from Dr. Ephlin, Principal
Perseverance:persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. Sometimes persevering is difficult especially towards the end of the school year. As a parent of a High School Senior I am constantly reminding my own daughter to finish strong. Let's finish strong these last two six weeks. These weeks are just as important!!
Please make sure you check out our Upcoming Events at the bottom of this Newsletter as well as our webpage where you will find our campus calendar with a list of all of our events for the entire year.

Upcoming Interim Assessment Dates
All students will be participating in two or more Interim Assessments in the coming weeks. Interim assessments are state-developed tests that will help us determine your child's progress as we continue to prepare students for the STAAR test. We ask that you mark your calendars to avoid making doctor appointments, travel plans, etc. during these testing days. Testing will take place from 8:20 - 12:15, which includes time for lunch.
March 2 - 8th grade Science (6th and 7th grade not testing)
March 3 - 8th grade Social Studies (6th and 7th grade not testing)
March 4 - Make-up testing for any 8th grade student who was absent or did not finish on March 3 or 4.
Attention 6th Grade Parents!
Your student will need to have proof of the following vaccinations PRIOR to starting 7th grade:
Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis)
MCV4 (meningitis)
I advise you to make an appointment to get your student vaccinated as soon as possible (if you haven't already). There is usually a rush to get this done in the summer and local clinics may run out, impacting your student being able to start school on time. If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Stella at (512)424-8817. Your doctor may fax updated records to (512)424-8940.
Local vaccination resources:
Family Physician; Local Pharmacies; Williamson County & Cities Health District 512-248-3257; Travis County Health Department 512-972-5520

8th Grade IB Community Projects
Attention ALL 8th graders! This week during FLEX (2/26 & 2/27) is Checkpoint #2 for your IB Community Project. Make sure you meet with your supervisor and fill out the google form together. Check the timeline (pg 15) in your handbook for more information. All students have been given a hard copy of the handbook - access the digital version HERE for more information.
Is the 8th grade IB Community Project required - the answer is YES.
The next step in your project will be to “create the solution and take action.” We are about ½ way through our project timeline - if you are not up to date on your project, check out the timeline and meet with your supervisor to make a plan of how to catch up. You still have time to do so!
SAVE the date! The IB Community Project presentations and exhibition will take place at the end of April. Presentations are scheduled for Monday 4/20 and Tuesday 4/21, with the exhibition will be the morning of Tuesday, 4/28 (9-10 am).
2019-2020 School-wide Community Project - Caring for Cambodia
Each year, as part of the IB (International Baccalaureate) programme, Hernandez partners with a local non-profit to provide educational and service opportunities for our students. For the 2019-2020 school year, we have partnered with the Caring for Cambodia organization. https://www.caringforcambodia.org/
UPDATE on our Student Fundraiser for Caring for Cambodia
Thank you to all of our students and faculty who donated generously to our toothbrush and toothbrush collection campaign!! Caring for Cambodia donates 20,000 toothbrushes/toothpaste a year in support of the oral health of their 6,600 students. These are considered a luxury in Siem Riep, Cambodia. As part of an International Baccalaureate school, our students are encouraged to “Think GLOBAL, Act LOCAL.”
