Voice of a Champion
We are pleased to shine the spotlight on Madison Coil, 2023 graduate of GCHS.
Madison was a student who struggled socially during her freshman year. She was in the Associate Principal’s (Steve Herman) office for the wrong reasons several times. As Steve Herman relates; “I could see there was a light in her and I wanted her to know that I was in her corner, so I asked her to be in the Champions program starting the second semester.” Madison agreed and off they went. Then came COVID. Mr. Herman and Madison communicated through email, but it was not the same. She struggled with online education but continued moving forward academically.
When they were able to get back to in person learning, they were able to meet more regularly, and Madison continued to show growth and graduated on time. She also never again visited Mr. Herman’s office for anything disciplinary.
“The champions program made a drastic difference in my high school experience. Before joining the champions program, I was not doing very well in school. After I joined, my grades and overall experience in school greatly improved. Having a mentor who was motivating and more than willing to help me benefited me in many ways. The champions program helped me, and many others become motivated to work hard and to achieve their goals.”
“Madison has grown into a wonderful young lady and one that I am very proud of. She certainly did not reach her goal every semester, but that wasn't necessarily the point. The point was that she knew she had someone at school who cared about her and wanted to see her succeed.”
The Champions’ program motivates them to develop work habits that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

To Be a Champion...
A warrior… A fighter…
more importantly, at Garden City High School, a Champion is a student who commits to working with a mentor dedicated to helping that student succeed. GCHS Champions promise to do their best to achieve previously unimaginable goals. A Champion receives a financial incentive each semester his or her goals are achieved.
With the Champions program, we are able to help students stop slipping and start gripping their education and their future. At-risk students are not the students that typically ask for help, but they are the ones that need it the most. They are the students that slip through the cracks, and are least likely to graduate in four years.
Students are provided with customized academic goals that they work toward for the duration of the semester. Once final grades are posted, successful students are invited to celebrate their achievements, share a meal, and receive their rewards at the Champions banquet.
What the Champions are Saying about the Program
“Champions is a very inspiring program that really pushes you to be your best, I loved being able to meet with a mentor weekly and it helped me see that I was capable of a lot more. Even if I didn’t meet my goal my grades still improved and I was still proud of myself for the work I put in”
– McKenzie
“When I first started the Champions program two year my grades were C’s and D’s. This program motivates you to do your best” … “hard work pays off” … “I went from 1.2 to 2.0 thanks to this program”- Zyniah
Celebrating Our Champions
A large majority of our Champions, 85%, improve their academics during the semester and we continue to have 25% or more meet their goal that earns them a scholarship.
We wouldn't be able to celebrate or even have the Champions program without the gracious donations to the program through our Champions Golf Outing. If you are an alumni, this is a great way to give back to your roots, your school, your community, and make a mark that could last for generations!
Please consider golfing, sponsoring, or doing both for this great cause.
