Did You Know?
Grade 4 - Private and Personal Information Common Sense Media lesson
I can learn about the benefits of sharing information online, but also about the safety and security risks of sharing certain types of information.
I can understand what type of information can put me at risk for identity theft and other scams.
I can distinguish between personal information, which is safe to share online, and private information, which is unsafe to share.
personal information: information that can’t be used to identify you, such as your age, gender, how many siblings you have, your favorite food, etc.
private information: information that can be used to identify you, such as your Social Security number, street address, email, phone number, etc.
identity theft: when a thief steals someone’s private information in order to pretend to be that person
personal information - often is safe to share. But you should never share private information without the permission of a parent, guardian, or teacher.
Grade 5 - Strong Passwords Common Sense Media lesson
I can identify the characteristics of strong passwords.
I can apply the characteristics of strong passwords to create new passwords.
I can create secure passwords with my family members.
STRONG PASSWORD DOs:
DO share your password only with your parents
DO create passwords with at least 8 characters
DO use combinations of letters, numbers, and symbols
DO change your password regularly - at least every six months
STRONG PASSWORD DON’Ts: DON’T give a password to anyone else - not even your friends DON’T use passwords that are easy for people you know to guess, like your nickname or your pet’s name DON’T use any private information in your password DON’T use a word in the dictionary as a password
Keyboarding Practice
At Hampden Meadows we use www.typing.com to practice keyboarding lessons. I encourage students to rest their fingers on the home keys, sit with their bottoms on the chair and legs touching the floor.
Your child should know his/her login information at this point. Five minutes of keyboarding practice a day would go a long way in ensuring muscle memory.
