Prestons Post

Term 1, Week 9

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to our Week 9 newsletter.

NAPLAN

Congratulations to all our year 3 and 5 students on completing the NAPLAN assessments. Over the past 2 weeks, 163 students have completed assessments in writing, reading, language conventions and numeracy. They have had to use their technology skills and answer a range of questions assessing their understanding of curriculum across many areas. Once assessment data is returned, teachers will be using the information to plan and program appropriate lessons for our students. We are proud of all the efforts of our students and wish to thank Mrs Squadrito, Ms Thomas and Mrs Beavis for all your organisation.

PSSA

This term we have had teams represent Prestons PS at Summer PSSA in Oztag, Newcombeball, T-ball and softball. These sports will return in term 4. In Terms 2 and 3 we will participate in Winter PSSA. Sports offered will be Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Netball and Touch football. Students will be invited to trial for a sport soon. Students selected in a PSSA team represent Prestons PS and are asked to be in sports uniform including a hat, try their best and ALWAYS display good sportsmanship towards the referee, opposing team and their own team mates.

AT SCHOOL ON TIME

As day light savings is coming to an end, we are seeing an increase in students coming to school late. These are recorded as unjustified partial attendance and will affect a student’s attendance data. All partial attendance, late arrival or early departure need to be justified. This week we had 173 students recorded with a partial attendance. Effects of partial attendance includes disrupted routines, low achievement and poor responsibility skills. A helpful hint to help get your child to school on time is to talk to them the night before about the routine of school the next day and to plan and organise things ahead of time.

EASTER HAT PARADE

This week you would have received notes regarding EASTER HAT PARADE, MUFTI DAY and RAFFLE. Just to clarify, mufti day will be held next week where students will donate an item that will be used for the hampers that will be raffled at the Easter hat parade. Thank you to the P&C for their hard work in trying to organise and set this up. P&C raffle tickets were sent home this week. Sold raffle tickets and payments are to be handed into the office as soon as they are sold. Additional books are available from the office.

Have a wonderful weekend and don't forget to ask your child what they are learning at school.

Classroom Chat with K Wombats

Wombats have been enjoying getting to know their peers, classroom and teachers! We have been learning all about how to be a quality learner who is also safe and respectful.

The students have been learning the sounds that letters make, reading fun rhyming stories and completing a lot of fun hands on activities to learn all about numbers!

K Wombats have met their year 6 buddies and are excitedly waiting for the next buddy session! Our favourite part of the day includes anything with singing and dancing, there are many wonderful performers in K Wombats!

Classroom Chat with 4 Killer Whales

4 Killer Whales have been off to a swimming start this term!

Within our math sessions we have been busy launching into class activities to gain a better understanding of math concepts. Killer Whales would then explore and tackle worded problems in small groups. At the end of each math session our class summarises its learning through group presentations and class discussions.

I am very proud to be having a whale of a time as part of this class family!
