About Ungifted

Ungifted by: Gordon Korman is a realistic fiction book about a middle schooler at Hardcastle Middle School named Donovan Curtis. Donovan Curtis has an IQ of 112 but despite his average intelligence, he is very dumb. He's constantly getting in trouble and always says he just can't help it. He has an older sister named Katie, a mother, and a father and they are always telling him how dumb what he does is and how one day he will get injured from one of his shenanigans. On this particular day Donovan was in detention for reciting an insulting cheer about his schools beloved basketball team over the PA system on the day of one of their biggest game against Salem Junior High. When the teacher watching him decided basketball was a higher priority than watching Donovan, his friends the Daniels broke him out of detention. Once out of detention Donovan accidentally hit a metal statue with a tree branch and sent a giant metal ball rolling down a hill into the schools gymnasium filled with students. Donovan got caught by the superintendent of Hardcastle schools, Dr.Schultz. By mistake Dr. Schultz gave Donovan the perfect place to hide and wait for things to blow over, he sent Donovan to the Academy of Scholastic Distinction. The Academy is full of geniuses who Donovan has no chance to fit in with, but all of Donovan's differences seem to be what helps him bond with his classmates and give them a sense of normalness they never new they needed.

My favorite scene from Ungifted was when Hardcastle Middle School and the Academy of Scholastic Distinction had a combined school dance. The robotics teams robot was brought out into the middle of the dance by a Hardcastle student, that caused a lot of commotion at and anger in the robotics team. One of Donovan's friends at the academy, Noah who is obsessed with you tube tried a wrestling move on the crowd and dived off the DJ's booth. Instead of calming things down like Noah thought it would, it caused more commotion and even a fist fight between the two schools.I thought this scene was hilarious and something I would personally like to see.
