M6 Introduction to Learning
#1. Complete the Module 6 Pre-Test. Take the pre-assessment quiz to establish how much about our topic you already know. You are required to take this pre-assessment, but don't worry. It does not impact your grade!
#2. Review the glossary and any vocabulary practice. You will be required to know the terms included for the post assessment at the end of the module.
#3. Begin lesson 1 by reviewing the notes to learn about Classical Conditioning. Review the information in the presentation.
Please let me know if you have any questions! Have a great day!
In Module 6, you will learn about learning! What is learning? Psychologists define it as a relatively permanent change due to experience. Learning doesn't simply occur in the classroom, most behaviors and actions a person exhibits is the result of some type of learning, There are three ways learning occurs:
- classical conditioning
- operant conditioning
- observation
How do we learn? Our minds naturally connect events that occur in sequence; we are all experts at seeing patterns. For example, you see a flash of lightning, your immediate reaction is to wince because you know the thunder will follow.
Learned associations create habits, and behavior becomes associated with context. This is referred to as associative learning. Since we learning that certain events occur together, we learn to relate their own behavior to particular outcomes. Conditioning is the process of learning associations. In classical conditioning, we can associate tow stimuli. In operant conditioning, it can be an association of an action and a consequence.

Did You Know..?
John B. Watson was a prominent psychologist at Johns Hopkins University. He is considered to be the founder of a school of psychological thought known as behaviorism. Behaviorists believe that behavior is a result of an observable stimuli in the environment causing a response in an organism. Watson, however, was ultimately dismissed from the university as a result of an unethical experiment he performed on an 11-month old boy named Albert (see Instruct and video below for details). Since he could not continue his academic studies, Watson moved into the world of advertisement where he applied his knowledge of classical conditioning to creating successful ad campaigns for such companies as Johnson & Johnson, Maxwell House, and Lucky Strike cigarettes.
