JANUARY VIRTUE OF THE MONTH: FIDELITY

THIS JANUARY 2021 VIRTUE OF THE MONTH IS FIDELITY, IN THE YEAR OF HOPE!

"Be living witnesses of the greatness and beauty of Christianity."

~St. Gianna Beretta Molla

As we begin the new year with resolutions and hopes for a better year, St. Bernard students will learn about the virtue of Fidelity. This virtue, modeled by God, is about keeping our promises and commitments to God and each other. We will study the examples of saints who were faithful to God in seemingly ordinary lives. Our saints this month: St. Jacinta and Francesco; St. Andre Besette and St. Gianna Molla showed their fidelity to God even when struggles of daily life were overwhelming.

SEL during Unprecedented Times

This week our teachers participated in a virtual training on Social Emotional Learning presented by Layne Pethick. This training emphasized how critical mental health is to children’s success in school and life and how the "Current Normal" can affect our children. Parents are the MOST important adult in a child's life and can help drastically improve a students’ sense of connectedness and well-being. Here you will find the power point used during our presentation with some helpful information and exercises.

WHAT'S BRUIN?

Artist Outreach Program is at SBS!

Starting this month of January, Artist Outreach will be sending several "creatives" to work with our students PreK-5. The purpose of the Artist Outreach program is to use the creative arts to empower, innovate and educate.Through inventive practice, TAO builds connection between the arts and everyday life, giving youth a more dynamic education through our teaching system while inspiring educators to think more creatively and encourage self-discovery through the use of our practitioners.

Stand-alone classes for Grades 2-5: Audio Story Book Subject: History and Creative Writing

TAO Artists use Foley design (sound effects) to build a story or poem from current events or a history lesson about which they are learning. During the exercise, students gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their peers as they work together to formulate creative literature and poetry.

Pre-K thru Grade 2 class concepts: Rhythmic Vocabulary Subject: Rhythm and Fluency

TAO artists create drum circles with students and use rhythms and drums to help students pronounce their current vocabulary words (provided by teachers). As well, it helps build rhythm and rhyme for necessary fluency skills. This program is best performed in a repetitious format over several weeks. Similarly, to practicing musical scales: if this program is practiced regularly, it has been proven to enhance fluency speed, speech, inflection and articulation. along with word association songs to help students use movements to identify the words and math concepts with music and mnemonics.
