The Siple Scoop
January 2019
A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
A new year always brings hope for new beginnings! As an educator I feel like I have the joy of experiencing this two times a year, once at the beginning of the school year and then at the beginning of the New Year in January.
I do my best to avoid the news and negativity. I tend to be a positive, optimistic person in general and watching or listening to negative news or stories brings me down. I don't like that feeling so I avoid it, but I have been noticing a trend in society and wanted to take a moment to address it with my Siple family.
I've noticed that with the increase in social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) that it feels like what people send out and how it gets interpreted can cause conflicts or hurt feelings. I know I have received emails before and I wasn't sure exactly how to take what the sender was saying. We can misread written text and become angry or hurt when it wasn't the intention of the person sending the message at all. For this reason, I have decided to extend grace to anyone I get email or texts from. What do I mean by this?
What I mean is that when I receive a written message from someone, I have decided to assume the person is writing with my best interests at heart. I am going to assume that they are a good person and are trying to communicate a sincere message to me. If there is anything that is unclear, I am going to ask them to clarify without assuming the worst or getting angry.
I believe I have the best students and families at this school that any Principal could have. I also believe I have the best staff at Siple that any Principal could have. If we all extend grace and kindness to one another, and continue to assume the best of each other, I believe we would all help make the world a better place. Maybe our positivity and kindness would spread to the greater community and further. I am up for the challenge. I hope you will join me. Let's work together to make 2019 a kinder, more positive year for the people we interact with throughout our days. I believe we can all make a difference.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
May You Find What You’re Looking For
Welcome to 2019! Every January many people set a New Year’s Resolution in an effort to improve. My hope is that you choose to look at the growth you’ve made in 2018 and continue to build on that progress. Each year has its own opportunities and challenges, but we have the privilege to choose what we spend our energy on for the year. If we spend time thinking about the difficulties, then we will use our energy thinking of the negatives. However, the opposite is also true. If we choose to focus on the positives, then we rise above the challenges and invest our energy on good. Good is always there if we choose to look for it. The choice is ours.
With that in mind, remember that one of my roles as counselor is to partner with families to help. If you are in need of resources, please call or email me and I will do my best to help. Let’s work together to make 2019 the best year yet for all the kids at Siple Elementary!

FUN TO BE FIT
HAPPY NEW YEAR everybody! I hope everybody had a wonderful Holiday break! We will be finishing up our hockey tournament that we started right before Christmas break. After hockey is finished we will be starting our bowling unit. I love this unit. The students will get a chance to learn how to roll a bowling ball, take score and learn what a strike and spare are. The district has a bowling unit that we share with all the elementary school buildings. We have carpet lanes with two different types of bowling balls depending on the grade level that is in the classroom. We start out learning the proper way to roll a bowling ball - (Push - Step - Swing - Roll).
The 3rd and 4th graders will start to learn how to take score (even though it is done for you at the bowling alley). I believe that it is important that they understand how and why the score changes when you get a strike or a spare. We will learn about the arrows and aiming the bowling ball. Bowling is so much fun and is something that the WHOLE family can do. I encourage everybody to take a day or night and take the family bowling. We have a wonderful bowling alley in Davison. Our Siple Stars can show you all the things they have been learning in our classroom.
