What do we do in class?
In each class, students exchange books, hear books read aloud, and work on the skills they need to be 21st Century learners: http://www.ala.org/aasl/standards/learning
The lessons build on each other through the grade levels, so while kindergartners are learning about how to take care of books and are just falling in love with the written word, fifth graders can navigate the library with ease and are working on their research skills in preparation for middle school. All students are taught cybersafety and digital literacy lessons through out the year.
No matter the grade level, students are exposed to a wide range of literature as we do author and illustrator studies, prepare for the Battle of the Books, and read the nominees for the South Carolina Picture Books Award.

What is library adminstration?
Well, first of all, the state has standards for all public school libraries that lay out certain requirements for the library, including the number of books per student and their age (the material's age, not the student's), the number of periodical subscriptions, the variety and currency of reference materials, and more, so I make sure that our library meets or exceeds those standards whenever possible. This means weeding materials that are damaged, out of date, or contain misinformation, as well as using our budget to best of my ability to order both replacement and new materials. I also catalog new materials to prepare them for shelving, inventory our current holdings and analyze circulation data to assess areas of greatest interest and need.
In addition, this year I've increased the circulation limits for each grade level, and we are now circulating around 750 books per week, so occasionally the library will be a bit haphazard with returned books waiting to shelved or shelves needing to be straightened. At least weekly, I shelf read and shelve. Shelf reading is the key to keeping the books in the right driveways (every book has one driveway and one correct address, I tell students), and involves sitting in front of each shelf and reading the spine label to make sure that each book is in the right place, from E picture books to FIC chapter books to Nonfiction books, and it ensures that when a child wants to read about cheerleading or check out a Llama Llama book, that those titles are findable. This year is also a bit different because I've changed how the fiction chapter books are organized: one set of shelves holds all our series and the other holds books organized and labeled by genre, so students can now browse the shelves more like they would in a bookstore.
Do you do anything else?

- Co-facilitate the CS-First Google Storytelling Club with Ms Jenkins
- Co-facilitate the Robotics Club
- Serve as Vice-Chair on the SC Children's Book Award Committee
- Serve on the District Media Specialist Advisory Council
- Serve on the District Read In Committee
