What's Happening at the "D"
Volume 7 #3
First Days of School...
It was nice seeing students and families last week! I know there is a lot of nervousness about the school year. We all feel it. Let's all try to take it one day at a time, try to keep our students calm, allow some grace for ourselves and others.
I wanted to go over a few things regarding the remote learning environment. We are going to try to mirror a typical school day as much as possible. Attendance will be taken, students will have scheduled recess, specials (Media Center, PE, Art, and Music) and scheduled lunch.
School will begin at 9:10am every morning. Teachers will begin with a morning meeting or circle and take attendance.
To start the school year, teachers will begin with get to know you activities during instructional time, just as we would if we were in person. The relationships that are built with the teacher and classmates at the beginning of the school year sets a good foundation, builds trust, connections, and comfort. Teachers will also spend time helping students get to know their device and learning programs. Students learning how to navigate the devices will hopefully promote student independence. Light academics will be infused so teachers can get to know students abilities.
Lunch will be every day from 12 noon until 12:40.
At 12:40, afternoon attendance will be taken, along with a teacher check in.
Afternoon instruction will continue until 3:50, when there will be an afternoon meeting from 3:50 until 4:00 pm. At 4pm, teachers will sign off for the day.
Throughout the day, students will have a mix of synchronous and asynchronous learning. Meaning, at some times, teachers will be live with their instruction, and at other times students will be given tasks to do on their own, just like a day when we are in person. Your child's teacher will provide the specific schedule for their class.
Teachers will be available to students from 9am until 4pm, except during lunch and specials times. Your teacher will give you a schedule with when specials are planned.
The DeKeyser staff is here for you and your child! We want this to be a smooth and seamless transition until we can come back together in person.
It's a great time to be a Dolphin!
With Appreciation,
Mary Beth Merlo
