Aberdeen School District No. 5 -- January 14, 2021
In-Person Component coming soon for PreK to Grade 3
Doors open Feb. 1: At the School Board meeting on Tuesday, the School Board will be asked to formally approve the plan to bring PreK - Grade 3 to school for an in-person component starting February 1.
Superintendent Alicia Henderson noted that the district is committed to making sure all schools are equipped to follow Department of Health and Labor & Industry guidelines and requirements.
"No part of this pandemic has been easy on our students and families," Superintendent Henderson said. "We are thrilled to be able to bring students into the classroom again, even though it can only be for part of the day at this time. I appreciate all of the thought, care and planning that has gone into coming up with a schedule for the in-person component we are able to offer."
Schedule: The elementary schedule is provided below. In general, students will continue to receive their core instruction (the 3Rs) remotely via Canvas in the mornings, and come to school in the afternoons for follow-up instruction and support from their classroom teacher. The in-person component is optional.
Food Service: Students will receive "grab and go" meals.
Answer the phone, please: Schools began calling families on Friday, Jan. 15, to determine whether they will be returning in-person. "It's important that we have an accurate number so we can serve all students -- both remotely and in person," Dr. Henderson said.
Provided the state metrics and guidelines aren't changed, Grades 4-6 will be invited back February 15 with grades 7-8 and 9-12 following in two week intervals.
"All of us are looking forward to seeing students at school," Superintendent Henderson said.
AHA! You can order greeting cards from Aberdeen students
The artwork featured in this issue of ASD5 News is just a sampling of the many greeting card designs by Aberdeen High School students now available for purchase through the AHA! Club, which stands for Aberdeen High Arts. You can also purchase 8x10 prints of the original student artwork.
AHA! Club is the visual art leadership club affiliated with the Aberdeen High School Art Department under the mentorship of Molly Houk, AHS art teacher.
In a Visual Arts Advisory Committee meeting in the fall, a local business owner and Advisory Committee participant, Britta Jackson, had the idea of helping the students sell their artwork as cards and prints. Since then, they've been meeting weekly and working hard to make this fundraiser happen, Ms. Houk said.
Please note that shipping is not included. Instead, there will be a pick-up event at the AHS Covered Walkway from noon to 6 p.m. on February 10. If shipping is necessary, please email
You can access the card sale directly at the Art Department Page on the Aberdeen High School website: https://www.asd5.org/Domain/72
There are more than two dozen designs to choose from.
