Term 4 Week 8 Friday 1 December 2017
A Message from the Principal
As Christmas draws closer, the Advent season begins on Sunday 3rd December and concludes on Christmas Eve.
During Advent we prepare for the coming of Jesus. Advent encourages us to be open and ready to become closer to Jesus.
Our students have been preparing for the Advent season by a practical collection of food and household items for the House of Welcome in Granville. The House of Welcome is a Marist initiative to support recent refugee families.
As a community we pray:
God our Father,
may the simplicity of the birth
of Jesus, your Son,
remind us
that we can readily discover him
in the ordinariness of our daily lives
Amen

Urgent Notification - Industrial Action
On Monday 4 December, staff from Cerdon College will be involved in a Protected Industrial Action from 8:45 am to 12:30 pm, that is, part of the school day. This industrial action is being taken because of the Independent Education Union’s inability to negotiate a suitable Enterprise Agreement for staff working in the Catholic Education sector.
There will be minimal supervision available for students in Years 7 to 11 at the College from 8:45 am to 12:30 pm. Students will be able to use this time to complete homework or assignments, or practice Showcase items.
Classes will resume at 12:30 pm with Roll Call. Lunch will be as usual from 12:50 pm to 1:30 pm. Lesson 5 and 6 will be as per Day 1 Timetable.
Showcase will not be impacted by this Industrial Action. Rehearsals will be as advised and all performers need to be at school by 6:00 pm. Displays for Visual Arts and TAS works will open at 6:00 pm. A BBQ will be operating from 5:30 pm with any proceeds being donated to the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal.
Apologies for any inconvenience these altered school arrangements causes for families.
Student Safety Travelling to and from School
Parents are encouraged to have conversations with their daughters regarding their journey to and from school. In our society the practice of listening to music in headphones while we are walking is all too common. While this is an enjoyable means of passing the time, headphones prevent the listener from being completely aware of their surroundings. Students must ensure, for their safety, that they are attuned to what is happening around them, particularly when crossing roads. A student with headphones on is likely to not know if someone has followed them or approached them from behind. Where possible students should look to travel with a friend or in a group.
The safety of all students here at Cerdon is paramount and if parents have this discussion with their daughter’s it will assist us in meeting this end.
Mr N Mulheron
Student Attendance
The NSW Education Act (1990) requires every child from 6 years to 17 years of age to be at school every day the school is open. The only acceptable reason for an absence is an illness that is fully documented.
Any extended time away from school for any reason may mean that a school will require a student who has missed classes to repeat a school year, as the school may be unable to certify that a student has achieved the syllabus outcomes for that stage.
Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will not be given leave for any reason at a time when they have an Assessment Task or Examination. If leave is taken they will not be awarded marks for this task. This will have a negative impact on the student's HSC marks and Year 10 or Year 11 RoSA Grades.
As from Semester 2, the College will also be reporting the percentage of school attendance (the Attendance Level) on the report cover page.
Attendance Summary as at 1 December 2017

Student Leaders Visit Parliament House
On Wednesday 22nd of November, the Cerdon College leadership team were given the privilege to meet Ms Julia Finn, Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and representative of Granville for the Australian Labor Party, at State Parliament House. This provided students with the opportunity to share a formal lunch with our local parliamentary member and discuss matters affecting students and our community, such as public transport, educational standards, and the recent plebiscite results. We were also able to collaborate with other leaders from local schools in our electorate to develop ideas and initiatives which we hope to implement in the coming year. Following the lunch, we attended Question Time in the Chamber where our school, among four others, were welcomed and recorded in the Hansard.
This visit to the NSW Parliament was a rewarding experience because of the insight gained on how we must act as leaders on a smaller scale in our own school communities, as well as the friendships forged between schools. We’d like to thank Ms Tasioulas for accompanying us and aiding our understanding of the parliamentary proceedings, as well as Ms Finn for giving us the opportunity to express our thoughts and answered our enquiries.

Nursing Home Visit
On Wednesday November 22nd, Cerdon's Year 10 Service Leaders were given the privilege to visit the Cabrini Nursing Home in Westmead to assist in their Christmas preparations. The girls, along with Mr Harvey and Sr Kate, assembled and decorated Christmas trees, hallways, and foyers in a successful attempt to spread the Christmas spirit. Many of the residents were delighted to see young and new faces, while the staff and supervisors of the home were very hospitable and generously provided us with a delicious morning tea and lunch.
Overall, this experience was quite rewarding and allowed us to spread the joy of the Christmas season and visit and converse with residents of the Cabrini Nursing Home.
The girls are now aiming to collect over 120 Christmas cards to fill with joyful and heartfelt messages to give to the residents of the Cabrini Nursing home in order to make their Christmas a lot more enjoyable and festive.

Donations to the House of Welcome Foodbank
Thank you to all those members of our community who contributed to our Food Drive for the House of Welcome Foodbank. All donations were delivered on Friday and were greatly appreciated by the staff. Student representatives of Cerdon, Mikayla and Elizabeth, assisted Mr Mulheron and Mrs Schinella to stock the shelves at the House of Welcome. Donations from Cerdon have now meant that the organisation will be able to assist families seeking asylum over the Christmas period.

MSA Student Leaders Gathering
On 12 November Student Leaders from 17 Marist Schools in NSW attended the Marist Student Leaders Gathering at The Hermitage Mittagong. The program helped to further develop student leadership skills and provided many opportunities for student engagement and participation. The students explored the heart of Marist leadership in the context of our five Marist values. Jesus, Mary and St Marcellin Champagnat were presented as role models to aid students in developing their own leadership style.
The College leaders, Gabriela Badrov, Kelly Nguyen, Mikayla Menouhos, Shiarna Tarasenko and Emily Dang were very grateful to be given the privilege of attending the gathering and gaining a new insight into how they can be truly effective Marist leaders.
The 2018 Premier’s Memorial ANZAC Scholarship Competition:
Recipient Announced
Readers of the College Newsletter may recall that Cerdon College is one of 20 schools invited to send a student on the Premier’s Memorial ANZAC Scholarship to France and Belgium next year.
Around a dozen girls from Years 9 and 10 entered the competition to choose our scholarship recipient. They submitted some excellent and inspiring works, some of which were written pieces, the others being artworks of different media.
The final four entrants, who were interviewed earlier this term, were all from Year 10. They were: Victoria Purkis, Jemima Barkley, Tamsyn Balogh-Caristo and Jemma Lee Dickson. Congratulations to all of these shortlisted girls.
The recipient and winner of the scholarship, based on her mixed media artwork and very articulate interview, was Tamsyn Balogh-Caristo. The College wishes Tamsyn the best for her exciting experience next year.
Further to the ANZAC theme, a group of seven Year 10 students, accompanied by their Co-ordinator Mrs Drageljevic, represented Cerdon at a ceremony on Wednesday. A sample of soil from the Prospect and Sherwood War Memorial in Arcadia Street was taken and will be displayed, with a plaque, in the War Memorial in Hyde Park alongside 1700 others. This represents all of the places in NSW where soldiers in World War One enlisted from. Further details are at: http://www.anzacmemorial.nsw.gov.au/anzac-memorial-centenary-project/soil-collection-program
Photos show local MP Julia Finn (Member for Granville) and Cumberland Council Mayor Greg Cummings with Scholarship recipient Tamsyn; and all of the Year 10 girls who attended the ceremony.

Soil Collection Ceremony for Merrylands
On 29th November, six Year 10 students (Emma Balogh-Caristo, Tamsyn Balogh-Caristo, Jemma Lee Dickson, Quynh Doan, Jemima Barkley and Annie Taniane) accompanied by Mrs Drageljevic attended a soil collection ceremony at the Prospect & Sherwood War Memorial, Merrylands Remembrance Park.
At this ceremony, Julia Finn MP, State Member for Granville, led the service which commemorated the soldiers who fought gallantly in the First World War and who were from the Merrylands area.
This soil collection ceremony was thought of by the artist Fiona Hall. She suggested that soil be collected from over 1700 towns across NSW and be displayed alongside a plaque in the Hall of Service in Hyde Park Sydney, thus, remembering where the soldiers came from and allowing their stories of hardship, courage and loss to hit closer to home and place the public in a position to empathise with the soldiers and their families in a time of war and sacrifice.
“Hearing how many men enlisted in the Merrylands area during World War 1, and getting to hear some of their stories, unearthed the unknown history of our suburb which made it significantly more real than reading about it in a textbook.” - Emma Balogh-Caristo
“This was an insightful experience which has further developed our knowledge about those who fought for Australia in World War 1, allowing us to become closer with the greater community especially the local RSL.” - Tamsyn Balogh-Caristo
“It was an honour to be chosen to attend the ANZAC soil collection ceremony. We heard the stories of a few brave soldiers who came from the Merrylands area, which gave me a greater appreciation of the sacrifice that Australian soldiers made during World War 1.” - Annie Taniane
Illustrator Tim McEwen Visits Cerdon
On Monday the 27th November, Tim McEwen, an illustrator well known for his outstanding graphics and comic illustrations arrived at Cerdon College to conduct a workshop for students from Years 7 to 10 involved in Visual Arts or Visual Design. In this workshop, Tim McEwen displayed a portfolio containing his works to show us what he has achieved as a graphic designer and illustrator. Some of these works included characters from 'Happy Feet 2' and 'Rocky Rockodile' in Introducing: The Keyboard!. After this, we had learned how to draw comic figures. We proceeded on to completing a group activity where we had to construct a storyboard as a team, illustrating scenes about an astronaut on sticky notes then altering scenes in order to create a storyboard in its simplest form. Overall, this experience taught us many helpful tips and tricks in illustration and graphic designing and allowed us to understand careers in this field.
Caitlin Hitti (Year 10)
On Monday we met an artist called Tim McEwen. Throughout lunch and period 5, we learnt some techniques about drawing a figure as well as doing an exercise called “the wrong planet”. This exercise involved us getting into groups of five and creating storyboards a part of a story about an astronaut going to the moon and landing back on a planet that wasn’t earth. The catch was that everyone had to draw it at the same time meaning that we couldn’t see what the other person was doing. This produced some unusual results. In my group one group member’s drawing of the astronaut had rabbit teeth, while in my drawing the astronaut was a female. As a result, the imaged changed with various drawing styles every 4 frames, but is also meant that our Astronaut kept changing from being a male character to a female character. Overall our experience with Tim McEwen was a fun and unique one that I can definitely see myself participating in again if I had the chance.

Numeracy at Cerdon
The Wave 2 EMU (Extending Mathematical Understanding) Intervention Program has just concluded for 2017. The program was offered to 28 of our students in Year 7, who were identified as being mathematically vulnerable in two or more of the domains of Counting, Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, and Multiplication and Division. The girls worked in small groups of 3 or 4 with an EMU Specialist teacher and learned valuable numeracy skills and strategies which they took back to all their subjects, not only Mathematics. The learning experiences provided by the EMU Specialist teachers were always fun but also challenging, providing the girls with lots of opportunities for ‘hard thinking’.
To measure a student’s progress in the program, an MAI (Mathematics Assessment Interview) is administered. This enables the student’s Growth Points in each of the domains to be determined. A student is expected to grow by one Growth Point, per domain, in a year (a growth of +4). After just 14 weeks on the program many of our Year 7 students showed growth of up to +9, a fantastic achievement.
A big thank you to the EMU Specialist teachers this semester; Mrs Agius, Miss Nimac, Miss Soo, Mrs Manduci, Miss Barbara and Mrs Redwin.

Enrichment@Cerdon
The end of term is shaping up to be a very enriching and exciting time for many of our girls. We recently had three Year 11 students participate in the L'Oréal Australia Girls in Science schools forum 2017 at the UNSW while a group of Year 10 students participated in the UNSW STEM week; representatives from a variety of Rotary supported programs participated in the Rotary Youth Initiatives Showcase; our NYSF participants completed part of their program while many students are finalising their applications to a variety of summer programs including the Science Experience at USYD, Women in Engineering UNSW, ACCESS for Women UNSW and the National Computer School USYD. We also recently held the Year 11 Knowledge Challenge and this coming week the year will conclude with the Year 9 Knowledge Challenge.
The Year 11 Knowledge Challenge
Fresh from their preliminary exams, the Year 11 students were eager to participate in some stress release and test their skills in the annual Knowledge Challenge.
The competition involves students answering questions in a variety of subjects including english, mathematics, the different sciences, the arts, the humanities subjects, sport, religion and current affairs. The competition was very fierce with Colin out to defend their title. After hundreds of fiercely contested questions the final was between Marcellin and Colin.
Congratulations to Vanessa Madeleine, Jayne Angeles, Anh Dinh and Anh Nguyen from Marcellin for a fantastic effort and for making it to the final. A special congratulations to the Gabriela Badrov, Nicole Gereige, Jessica Le, Emily Dang and Carissa Zajac from Colin for defending their title and for winning the 2017 Year 11 Knowledge Challenge.
National Youth Science Forum - Orientation Day
On Saturday the 28th of August, Teresa Tran and Jessica Li attended an orientation day in preparation for their NYSF. This program, sponsored by Rotary, is a 12 day residential program, designed to give students across Australia a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in (STEM) science, technology, engineering and maths. Students will have the opportunity to visit a variety of science facilities, go on site tours around university, listen to lectures, take part in workshops, go to social events and participate in a range of activities that help students improve their communication and presentation skills.
The orientation day provided Teresa and Jessica with the opportunity to meet the other students who will be travelling to the University of Queensland in January. We wish both girls an enjoyable experience!
UNSW: L'Oréal Australia Girls in Science Schools Forum 2017
On 1st October we attended the L’Oréal Australia Girls in Science Forum at UNSW, where we were offered the opportunity to listen to the experiences of successful female scientists, and ask questions on their career path and achievements. The Scientists enlightened us with their experiences in the study of quantum physics, bacteria and physiology. We also learned how such research is working to help solve current world health issues.
As part of the program we participated in a medical science inspired hands on experiment, where we observed the effects of vigorous exercise on blood pressure and heart rate. This allowed us to investigate courses that interested us as well as gain an insight into what the university study environment is like. The day ended with a visit to the museum of disease. While confronting, this visit presented us with an opportunity to explore the physical effects of diseases on organs within the human body.
This day was a fantastic experience to investigate what is available for women in science and to explore the many future opportunities waiting for us. Katrina Jelavic, Mine Macaroglu and Amanda Awad.
The Rotary Club of Holroyd Showcase of Youth Initiatives
On 13th November the Rotary Club of Holroyd invited our students to showcase the programs which they support in our school. Our girls benefit greatly from Rotary’s support. We had representatives from the Rypen Leadership Camp, the The Model United Nations Assembly, The National Youth Science Forum and Australian Business Week. Our girls spoke eloquently about their experiences and were very appreciative of these opportunities provided by Rotary.
We congratulate her on this achievement and wish her every success.

MINDSET: The Winners Way™
9 Strategies to help you achieve your personal best
What’s your definition of a winner?
People or teams that consistently achieve their personal best because they are always looking to improve – that’s my definition of a “winner”.
Unfortunately there is a myth that “winners” achieve results easily – that they have something special or are natural at it. What’s truer is that “winners” have attitudes and strategies that give them the edge.
Here is a summary of the nine strategies to help you achieve your personal best.
Building Site
Access to the College Office is via the Sherwood Road footpath only. Parent co-operation in allowing Cerdon College to meet its Work, Health and Safety obligations is appreciated.
These building works should be completed by the start of the 2018 school year.
School Zones
Parents need to take note that the area surrounding Cerdon College is designated as a School Zone. Police and Council Rangers constantly patrol the area. They will have no hesitation in prosecuting drivers for driving offences.
In NSW more than one million school students travel to and from school each day. The vast majority of students do so safely. The NSW State Government is committed to further increasing safety for children during school travel times.
The school zones were selected according to a number of criteria concerning the risks young pedestrians are exposed to, including a combination of high traffic volumes, the level of pedestrian use and crash history.
All NSW school zones are sign-posted with regulatory signs that list the operating times of the school zones.
What times do the school zone speed cameras operate?
All school zone speed cameras operate 24 hours per day, seven days a week and detect vehicles exceeding the speed limit. They are also programmed to detect vehicles exceeding the 40km/h school zone speed limit during sign-posted school zone times.
For most locations these times are: 8am – 9.30am and 2.30pm – 4pm on gazetted school days.
How do I know I am entering a school zone?
NSW school zones are sign-posted indicating the operating times of the school zone. There are also large, bright yellow markings painted on the road showing the 40km/h speed limit. In addition to the regulatory signs Roads and Maritime has also installed flashing lights (school zone alert systems) at a number of school zone sites, including all fixed speed camera sites that are located in a school zone. School zone flashing lights are used as an additional warning system to alert motorists to slow down, and are not legally required in NSW.
Are school zones enforced on pupil free days?
Fixed digital speed cameras enforce the school zone 40km/h speed limit during the stated school zone hours on all gazetted school days. Pupil free days or staff development days fit into this category and in some cases there may still be students attending schools on these days.
There are also some instances where double demerits apply on a school day. This will usually happen when the day before a long weekend is also a gazetted school day.
School days are defined as those gazetted by the NSW Government and which can be found on the NSW Government website and in most annual diaries. Both Catholic and independent schools, irrespective of their term dates, have enforceable school zones in line with Department of Education school terms. The fixed speed cameras enforce the school zone speed limit in accordance with the Department of Education school term dates.
