Year In Review
Quite a bit has been accomplished so far. What a great start! We have grown from less than one percent of the student population identified, to serving and meeting the needs of over 2500 students with dyslexia. Through training, parent and community involvement, collaboration, and the support of an amazing district, we have achieved great things. It is an exciting time and we look forward to next year. As for this year, have you forgotten what has happened? Let's do a quick "Year In Review".
Garland ISD began on site accreditation with 36 trainees for their introductory year, with six trainees in their second year of training. This accreditation will ensure that all teachers working with students with dyslexia will be trained and able to test to become Certified Academic Language Therapists/Licensed Dyslexia Therapists.
We began the school year with trainees and therapists in place. We also have bilingual teachers/therapists in training, delivering Esperanza, a dyslexia curriculum for Spanish speaking students.
October: A Viewing of the Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia- It was a time for popcorn, movie watching and learning about dyslexia from the perspective of individuals with dyslexia.
December 2018- Bilingual Prepare, Share and Learn Event- Time for food, fun, and learning at Austin Academy. The community came out and learned more about dyslexia.
January 2019- New Year Event- This event was well attended and included many sessions for parents and teachers to learn about dyslexia, twice exceptional, social and emotional support, and instruction for students with dyslexia.
February 2019- Bilingual Dyslexia Simulation We had the very first bilingual dyslexia and learning disabilities simulation for the community. This simulation was written by our very own bilingual dyslexia team members!
March 2019- The last of the Parent Resource Meetings. If you missed any of these collaborative efforts, be sure to check the newsletter next year so you can join in.
March 2019- Experience Dyslexia simulations took place throughout the year. Crowds of 100+ parents, teachers and community members attended. March was the final Experience Dyslexia for the year.
April 2019- Dyslexia Community Event was a place where parents could learn how to continue and strengthen the skills their students use in therapy, while in their own homes.
April 2019- 43 new positions were added to the dyslexia team, creating a team of over 100!
May 2019- Inaugural GISD Dyslexia Symposium was a conference for all. With keynote speakers, Nancy Disterlic and Virginia Gonzalez, the event included a variety of sessions.
May 2019- Our advanced trainees have graduated and ready to sit for their CALT exam!
