Top 20 Focus: Eliminating Negativity
Thought Circles: One thought leads to another and another, like a snowball getting larger and larger as it rolls down a hill. Getting caught in a thought circle leads to unnecessary worry. Students will learn strategies for dealing with thought circles such as saying, "STOP," "Not now," ask for help, or reminding ourselves to stick to the facts and not let a thought circle expand.
Mental Parking Lots: Park your thoughts about something that needs your attention in your mental parking lot until you have time to deal with it. This allows you to focus on the present and get through your day. Because you are not spending the entire day Below the Line, your thinking will be clearer and you will handle the situation more effectively and make a better decision.
Complaining: Complaining is a way of bringing negativity to our thinking or communication with others. We will discuss: What do you complain about? Do you complain a lot? If you do, complaining is going to become a habit. Instead of developing the negative habit of complaining, Top 20s develop the positive habit of being grateful. Next time you feel like complaining, choose to think or talk about something you are grateful for.
Social Tornadoes: Social tornadoes are created when we share our negative Thought Circles with others and they become involved. The first sign of a tornado almost always occurs when something or someone who is not present is mentioned in a negative way. When someone attempts to start a tornado by complaining, we can simply say, "Okay," or "I hear you." These responses reveal that we are listening but that we choose not to become involved in the tornado. If the tornado persists, you may need to repeat, "I hear you, " a second time or simply get up and walk away. Either by what we do or who we hang out with, we can develop the reputation of being a tornado starter, or someone who rips into others. When people expect that of us, they lose trust in us.
