News from this week
Dear Parents,
We had a busy week learning all about Simple Machines and Division. They are starting to grasp how to do long division, so they just need to keep practicing. I know the Partial Quotient method of division is a little confusing for some parents. but once the students fully understand it, it will be much easier for them. Please try not to teach them the algorithm we learned when we were in school because it can be confusing while they are learning this new way. They will eventually learn the algorithm when they get to 6th grade. I can't emphasize how important it is that they continue to practice their math facts. Many are struggling with their facts, so please have them practice 10-20 minutes daily on both their multiplication and division facts.
Last week, I sent home a Scholastic Book Order sheet for anyone wanting to order books. If you want to order any books from them, please do so by this Tuesday, September 25. You can send your order form and payment in to me, or you can order online.
Next week is another testing week at Gwin Oaks ES, so it is also a no visitation week as well. Fourth grade is NOT testing, but our schedule is different.
I hope to see your child at Morning Math on Tuesday at 7:15. :-) Now that we finished multiplying, we will move onto division. I will send out and post a few short videos to show you the 'new' way students learn long division. Please refrain from teaching them the way we learned growing up until they learn to do partial quotients.
If you would like to donate any treats to our class treasure box, you may send them in at any time. I usually have small things in there, such as candy, small toys, pens, etc. The treasure box is one of the treats students can purchase with their classroom money. If you have a question about any items you may want to send in, just send me an email.
Reading and typing logs are due every Monday.

What is PBIS?
Parents,
We have an exciting school wide initiative for the 2018-2019 school year! Gwin Oaks Elementary School is a PBIS School.
HOW PARENTS CAN SUPPORT PBIS?
Be Ready
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Family involvement in a child's education increases the child's likelihood of success. Your help with our behavior system is very important. We ask that you support our staff in the following ways:
• Please remind your child of the school's general behavior expectations each day before he/she leaves for school: Being ready, respectful, and responsible.
• Ask your child to give examples of how he/she demonstrated expectations while at school in different settings.
Thank you for your support. It is greatly appreciated.
