Hudson Hawk Band Updates

Week of 8/22/22

Beginner Band Parent Meeting

Tuesday, Aug. 23rd, 6:30pm

4405 Hudson Drive

Sachse, TX

All beginner band parents should attend our meeting at 6:30pm in the cafeteria. We will discuss band policies and procedures, let you know exactly what events we have planned for the year, collect forms and fees, and answer your questions.

Advanced Band Parent Meeting Presentation

If you missed the Advanced Band parent meeting on Thursday, you can see the presentation at this link. We did go into more depth about our Practice-a-Thon fundraiser and Wind Symphony parents learned a lot about the Texas Honor Band competition. If you have questions, please let me know!

Switching to BAND app over Remind

Because our band has grown so big, we can no longer use Remind. We have reached the maximum participants in multiple classes and do not have space for more unless we upgrade our account (which costs more than we wish to spend). We will be switching messaging services to the BAND app (which the Sachse HS band also uses) to align our cluster. Please sign up for the appropriate class(es) for your student. We will NO LONGER be using Remind, so if you were just signed up for band, you will not need that app/number any longer. Thanks for understanding!

Honors Band and Wind Symphony Sectionals

Honors Band and Wind Symphony students will begin sectionals THIS WEEK (August 22). Sectionals are an extra small group rehearsal that takes place outside of the school day. These sectionals are required and grades will be given for playing tests and pass-offs done during the sectional time. Please make every effort to schedule extra activities and appointments around this sectional schedule.

Order Yard Signs and Car Decals

We will be taking orders for yard signs and car decals from now until September 30th. We will put the charge for the orders in each student's Charms account after receiving the order form. You have until October 21st to complete the payment for the orders. Any orders that have not been paid for by October 21st will be cancelled. Expected delivery of the car decals and yard signs is early November.

Sign up for Private Lessons

The single biggest investment you can make in your student's musical advancement is signing them up for private lessons. Return the private lesson enrollment form to get your student started ASAP. Lessons are $20 each week and the fee is paid directly to the instructor. The quicker you return the enrollment form, the more likely your student is to receive their preferred time slot for lessons. Our teachers are THE BEST and they DO fill up every year.

If finances are the only thing holding you back from signing up for private lessons, we do offer some scholarship assistance. We have a small number of 1/2 and 3/4 scholarships available. Please fill out the scholarship application no later than September 2nd to be considered for a scholarship.

Advanced Band Supply List

If you missed our Advanced Band supply list at the end of last year, you can see the needed items at this link. We will be using the Foundations for Superior Performance book in all advanced band classes this year. The flip folder will also be needed before the first performance (August 19th for Wind Symphony and September 20th for Honors and Symphonic Band). Many of the items listed can be purchased at any of our recommended music stores, and possibly even cheaper there. We made the supply list with links to Amazon for ease, but feel free to purchase the supplies wherever you would like!

Canvas Update

When you log into Canvas, you will see that ALL Beginner Band students class shows Clarinet and ALL Advanced Band students show up as Non-Varsity Band. We combine all of the classes into one for ease of adding assignments and grading. If you look under "People" you should still see your student in the correct class. This is truly just for us to save time - instead of having to input assignments 12 times, we only have to do it twice. When we sync grades to Skyward, they will be correct and show up as the class your child is enrolled in. Thanks for your understanding!

Band Fees

Because our school band budget is so small, we have to charge a band fee so that we can provide the best music education experience for all our band students. This band fee covers all instructional materials (band binder and all its contents), band shirt, contest entry fees, solo accompanist fees, performance music, music theory subscription, transportation, meals before performances, incentive days, and so much more. We set up our band fees to be collected up front (or split into payments), so that we are not constantly asking for $5 here, $7 there, etc.

This year, you can pay band fees through cash or check (made out to Hudson Band Boosters), Paypal through Charms (watch this video to walk you through the Charms system), and for the first time - credit card through the band website. Visit the band website and enter the password HawkBD2223 to enter the secure page and pay online. Please consider adding the optional donation to your cart to cover the credit card fees we incur using this convenient service.

If you have a financial hardship, please communicate with us so we can help you. We never want a student to be unable to participate due to finances and will do everything we can to work with your family and ensure your student is included.

Lockers/Locks

All band students have been issued a locker to store their band instrument and band binder in during the school day. We have locks available for any student who wants to use one this year. It will be optional to use a lock, however, we will not be responsible for items that go missing or are damaged from a locker being used without a lock.

WE HIGHLY ENCOURAGE ALL STUDENTS TO USE A LOCK!

If you would like to use your own lock, you are free to do so. You will need to provide the band directors with a copy of the key or the combination if you choose to use your own lock.

Parents please help your student practice opening a combination lock. It is not a skill most students have experience with; they can definitely use your help!

Log in to Charms

Please take a moment this week to log in to Charms. www.charmsoffice.com

Log in as a parent/student/member

The school code is hudsonsoundmachine

The password for first time users is your student's GISD ID number (should be 6 digits)

For non-first time users, your password should be your student's ID with their capitalized initials in front (i.e. HB123456) unless you've changed it to something else.

Please update contact information (add adults as necessary), check your student's birthday ID, instrument, etc. and make changes as necessary. If you have questions or have difficulty logging in, please contact Mrs. Becker.

Morning/Afternoon Procedures

At this time, all students should be bringing all instruments and band supplies to school daily.

When students arrive at school in the morning they will come straight to the band hall to drop off their instrument and band binder. After putting their instrument in their locker, they will report straight to either the cafeteria to eat breakfast or to the big gym if they are not eating.

**ONCE THEY RECEIVE THEIR SOAR CARD & ID, STUDENTS MUST BE WEARING THEIR SOAR CARD WITH THEIR BAND PASS INSIDE THE POCKET TO BE ALLOWED DOWN TO THE BAND HALL BEFORE/AFTER SCHOOL.**

At the end of the day, students will come down to the band hall at dismissal to pick up their instrument and band binder to take it home and practice each night. If your student is a car rider, you are welcome to drop off and pick up your student in the back of the building (near door #11), where the band hall exit is. **It is less crowded at pickup in the back - take advantage of being in the band!**

When we begin sectionals with the Honors Band and Wind Symphony students, the band hall will open at 7:50am. That will begin the 3rd week of school.
