Perkins School News - October 2019
Monthly News for Parents
Letter From the Principal
The month of September has flown by! I am excited by how much our students have accomplished already! Thank you to our families who have quickly adjusted to new routines for arrival and dismissal. We are pleased with the amount of instructional time we have gained for our students with a new streamlined dismissal process. Thank you for your support as we get off to a positive start at Perkins School.
It was great to see many of you for Open House. We love when our students have a chance to show off their work and their classrooms to their families. If you were not able to complete our parent communication survey, please follow this link so we can learn more about how to stay connected. http://tiny.cc/qrh3dz
Again, this year we will be hosting our Fall Festival on Thursday, October 31st. I am excited to take part in this very special Perkins tradition this year. We will have activities for children all throughout the day beginning with our costume parade in the morning. Again this year, parents will be welcome to join us for the day courtesy of our Parent Hospitality Room with refreshments and activities for younger siblings provided by our very own Perkins School PTA. We want everyone to experience how much fun it is to be here at Perkins!
At Perkins, we know that parents are our primary educators. When we work together with families, our students make the most gains! If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, please feel to reach out. I would love the opportunity to work together to continue to make Perkins the best place for every student, every day!

Teaching Assistant Spot Light
Mrs. Ashburn was born and raised in Hanover, PA. She attended St. Joseph’s School from kindergarten through 8th grade, then graduated from Delone Catholic High School. She met her husband, Charles, while attending Pennsylvania College of Technology. They will be married 10 years this December. After college they moved several times for her husband’s work, while Brittany stayed at home raising their two sons, Connor and Colton. Five years ago they moved to Newark after her husband took a job in Seneca Falls. After volunteering at Perkins School when their youngest child started pre-k, Brittany knew she wanted to work with children at the school. She became a Teaching Assistant last year and has been loving every minute of it. She enjoys welcoming the students with a hug and smile every morning. In her free time she enjoys spending time with family, watching her boys play football, traveling and baking.

· Fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags, or give them glow sticks

· When buying Halloween makeup, make sure it is nontoxic and always test it in a small area first
· Remove all makeup before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation
· Teach children not to run from house to house

Fall Festival Costume Parade
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2019 at 9:15AM
The costume parade is back again this year for the Perkins School Fall Festival! The costume parade will go around the bus loop beginning at 9:15AM. For safety reasons, costumes should not be worn on the bus to school. Please have your child bring his/her costume to school. There will be time for him/her to change into and out of his/her costume at school. Costumes should be age-appropriate, not too scary, and no violent characters, please. Make-up, masks, and props (guns, knives, swords, fancy high-heeled shoes) are not allowed due to the length of our walk and concerns about visibility when wearing costumes.
If the weather does not cooperate for an outside parade, alternate plans for indoors will be developed. We look forward to seeing you there!
PARENTS: The Information You Need!
Tips for Working with the Beginning Reader
Reading each day with your child will help to develop important early reading skills. Here are some tips for working with children as beginning readers:
· Encourage your child to use his/her finger to point to each work.
· Read a sentence and have your child repeat it.
· Don’t be afraid to read the same book again. Repeated reading helps build reading fluency which is quickly and accurately.
· Take turns reading sentences or pages.
· Talk about the story as you read it. What do you think will happen next? What does this story remind you of? How do you think this character feels?
· 15 to 20 minutes is plenty for a beginning reader.
Have fun reading together!
