- Raven Homeschool
From the Director's Desk:
Welcome!
I hope you enjoyed a wonderful summer and fall. I also hope you are relaxed, recharged and ready to start a new homeschool year. I am so delighted that you are part of our amazing learning community here at Raven. I welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in educating your child(ren), and we look forward to working with you and your children.
All signs point to another incredible and productive homeschooling year. Our skilled and devoted team has been working diligently to enroll new families, order needed materials and connect families with local homeschooling resources. Our much-appreciated family liaisons and veteran homeschool parents have been welcoming families and sharing opportunities and other exciting events and programs. We are indeed a joyous and caring homeschool community with the common goals of nurturing responsible, caring students and promoting high-level learning.
COVID-19 Update
All Raven facilities have a COVID-19 operational plan. We have modified our operations to continue to provide Raven Homeschool families the highest level of service. Our goal continues to be to provide support to parents so they can prepare their children to become life-long learners, problem-solvers, and contributing members of their families, communities, and society by providing meaningful experiences that create understanding of their cultural heritage and the technological world. We believe that parents have autonomy in educational choices, are their child’s first and most important teacher, and will make the best educational choices for their children.
As we are beginning a school year like no other we have seen in the past, our focus will still be to ensure that:
every homeschool family, every day is finding a way to feel connected,
every homeschool family, every day is being challenged to encourage their child(ren) with new learning and experiences,
and every homeschool family, every day knows they have a champion they can turn to for assistance.
Family & Advisory Teacher Assignments
With Raven’s growth and the addition of new advisory teachers, we know that some families have experienced a change in advisory teachers. Moving families is difficult without causing imbalances and inequities. We are eagerly looking forward to supporting you in your homeschooling efforts. Thank you for understanding that it can take a few weeks for a family to acclimate to a new advisory teacher.
New Staff
Each year brings positive change. Raven has successfully grown to a point where this year we have quite a few new additions to our staff. We are delighted to welcome them! ALL of our staff works hard to make homeschool a positive experience for ALL.
Your commitment to ensuring that Raven remains a celebrated and successful homeschool is awe-inspiring. We eagerly look forward to greeting students and families again. It remains an honor and privilege to serve you and your children. Together, I know we will make this school year one of growth and achievement for all.
Partnering with families will be crucial this year as we face many obstacles due to the global pandemic. We encourage families to stay connected and informed by following our Raven website, Facebook page and reading the weekly Smore flyers for important updates and information.
We value our partnership with families as we navigate these challenging times together. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us with questions or concerns. Stay safe!
Warmest Regards!
Kimberly Bergey
Director

Student Recognition:
Keelan Cunningham - Juneau Office
Arliana & Laurence Wemple - Wasilla Office
This summer two Wasilla Raven Students, Arliana and Laurence Wemple, have become quite the experts at concrete and masonry work. Working alongside their father Chad, as part of a family-owned business, they constructed sidewalks, patios and three decorative walls for the entrance of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Arliana also served as the key organizer of all equipment and mobilization of rental equipment.
Talk about hard work, these kiddos are used to it and love it! In addition to concrete work, Arliana is also completing in-home drywall trim and fine finish work. Dad says, “Her finish work, well practiced, has become meticulous!”
Laurence completed the summer by running an excavator and skid steer. He was supervised on over a dozen jobs and he alone meticulously completed several basement excavating projects as well as setting general footers and grade for monolithic slabs.
Chad feels his children are well on their way to an independent future. “Arly” intends to pursue a university level education for construction and Laurence has saved his summer earnings and intends to add to that sum for a down payment on his own excavator.
Chad said, “I think these kids are well on their way to an independent future and being contributors to our community and I simply could not be more proud! Thank you Raven Homeschool and a special thanks to Joy, Monique, and Kimberly as they have proven at every turn to be personally invested in each one of my children’s academic journeys.”
Counselor's Corner:
In November students should be thinking about:
9th and 10th Grade: What do I want to be when I grow-up? Ryan has many tools available to help you start thinking about the future such as Career Interest Surveys, Learning Style Surveys, Get Real Surveys (what kind of salary do you really need as an adult). We can also help you plan a course of action to make sure you graduate high school on time!
11th Grade: Have you started thinking about what educational path you want to take after high school? Have you visited any of the many options in the state of Alaska? What can you do this year to ensure that you get into the program you want? Have you taken your ACT, SAT or WorkKeys test yet?
12th Grade: Are you on track to graduate this coming May? Make an appointment with Ryan to go over your transcript. Have you completed the FAFSA? Have you taken your ACT, SAT or WorkKeys test yet?
Some Hard Facts:
2006 – Average Salary/Year
High School Dropout - $21,000
High School Diploma - $30,000
Advance Degree/Certificate - $49,000 and up
50% of high school dropouts are unemployed
HS Dropouts are often labeled as people who don’t finish things
You have a better chance of winning the lottery than being successful in life if you drop out of high school.
A college or career school education = more $$$, more job options and more freedom! A college or career school education is a long-term investment. With careful planning you can find the school and funding options that work best for your situation and put you on the path to success!

NCAA & Raven Homeschool:
Raven Homeschool has been cleared by the NCAA and is an approved school for college bound competitive athletes. That means that NCAA accepts the Raven Diploma. We are one of very few "homeschool umbrella programs" that are approved diploma awarding programs.
What does this mean?
This means that if you are a college bound athlete that is seeking admission to an NCAA Division I or II or school with the purpose of competing for athletic scholarships Raven's diploma is accepted.
What's next?
Acellus is our curriculum that is certified and accepted as Core Courses that meet all NCAA requirements. Currently, there are several online curriculums that can be utilized that are already NCAA approved, such as North Dakota Independent Study. For unapproved curriculums, there are Home School Core Course approval forms that need to be completed. We will work with you to complete these forms.
Contact and Questions:
If you are a student athlete thinking about qualifying under NCAA, please contact Ryan Tilbury at 907-374-9432 or rtilbury@yksd.com. Our goal is to have a defined path to success for each of our college bound athletes. Updates to approved curriculums will be announced in our SMORES.

New Anchorage Staff:
Rebecca Adams - Advisory Teacher
Erika Jones - Advisory Teacher
My name is Erika Jones and I am a born and raised Alaskan. I have two active kids that play hockey and dance competitively. I spent the last 14 years working for ASD as a classroom teacher and as an elementary health specialist before accepting my dream job at Raven! I enjoy anything outdoors; from camping and hiking to traveling and walking my dogs. I have been married to my high school sweetheart for over a decade and we are proud to be raising our children where we both grew up.
Stephanie Leigh Buen - Administrative Clerk (Anchorage & Eagle River office)
Stephanie has been working with families, supporting them in their academic and creative growth for nearly twenty years. From desk work, to classroom learning, to community work in the arts, she's enjoyed watching families grow. Her favorite family being her own of course, with her husband, two boys, and personal household zoo.
Delta Office:
November has arrived, and it looks like a lot of winter outside! We were able to spend some time at the City Park while the weather was still good. We have enjoyed handing out backpacks to our smart Preschool students, Class of 2034. Congratulations to Katya and Igor and welcome baby Lucy! We also welcome Ana Zastavskiy who is filling in for Katya while she is out on maternity leave.
If you received your curriculum late and did not complete first quarter reports, please plan to do them before the end of November. Feel free to make a telephonic appointment to get support with getting grades into Brightways.
We miss seeing you all around our office. If you have an Elementary student who is willing to read aloud to Ms. Heidi, please call her. She is very excited about you reading!
Eagle River Office:
Eagle River advisory teachers are excited to see so many new-to-homeschooling parents discovering the benefits of homeschooling and actively engaging their students in learning. Parents got creative as they waited for their curriculum to arrive and made sure learning continued to happen in their households!
We added two new teachers to the staff here in Eagle River - Cortney Fogarty and Kayla Guerrero, and Graduation Coach Megan Rosendall was transferred to advisory teacher. All have hit the ground running with the largest percentage of growth out of all Raven offices. We also had a change in front office staff - Jamie Ruble, former Anchorage clerk/parent liaison moved to Eagle River as the office administrator and Stephanie Leigh Buen was hired as the Eagle River/Anchorage clerk.
Eagle River Clubs:
Eagle River parents organized a number of clubs to help keep students connected. Outdoor Club, Lego Club, Running Club, Show & Tell/Recess Club and Book Club all took place in the office parking lot or in nearby parks. Additionally, World Geography and US Geography Clubs were held virtually.
Teen Group:
The teens continued to be active with Parking-Lot Clean-up, Trash Pick-Up, and Study Breaks (walking from the office to Subway or Fried Rice Express). The teens also got together for a picnic of roasted hot dogs and munchies. Conlon, Eagle River’s TLC president, continues to work with Megan to come up with ways for teens to continue to stay connected during these times.
Training Opportunities:
The Eagle River team held a number of training modules for parents and created a number of helpful how-to Smores - Build your ILP, Reimbursements, Progress Reports, and Acellus to name a few.
New Eagle River Staff:
Cortney Fogarty - Advisory Teacher
My name is Cortney Fogarty. I am a born and raised Alaskan who is happy to be back home after getting lost in northern California for a few years. No matter where I have lived, since 2007 I've been a teacher in just about every grade level up to 8th. There is so much joy in watching a student's light click on when they build a new understanding.
My fondest memories as a child are being homeschooled with my four siblings in Anchorage, Alaska. I am so happy to be a part of the homeschool community again! Along with being an advisory teacher with Raven, I also get to be a parent. Raising my son is the best part of my life.
I know every parent works to make homeschooling a positive, fun experience for their children and I hope to support our families to make it a good experience for our parents, too!
Kayla Guerrero - Advisory Teacher
I am Kayla Guerrero and an advisory teacher in the Eagle River office. I feel so fortunate to have my Raven family and look forward to many more years here as we plan to enroll our daughter next year. I live with my husband, Roger, daughter, Stella, and our three doodles, Luna, Granite and Mowgli. We just moved to Eagle River and have really enjoyed being a part of this community. As a family, we enjoy adventuring around Alaska on our bikes and kayaks. I am always up for an adventure and rarely turn down opportunities to explore!
Jamie Ruble - Administrative Assistant
Fairbanks Office:
What a year it has been!
We have learned to work remotely and we have balanced our time between home and the office staggering shifts all the while handling unprecedented amounts of enrollments and curriculum orders. We’ve experienced nationwide shortages of computers and books. Our dynamic team of teachers and admins kept on course and delivered over a thousand students the tools they need to be successful. Best of all though, our building has a new look. We have a new entrance way, new siding, and some beautiful signs. Additionally, we installed COVID safety measures and incorporated plexiglass cubicles and other measures. Through all the adaption we have grown as a team and look forward to a successful year.
Homeschool 101
We presented Homeschool 101 in 4 sessions and over 80 parents attended. They had really good questions and we are super excited to see so much interest. Sessions covered reimbursements, grades progress reports, navigating Acellus and AK Grad. We decided to make this a regular offering.
A Big Thank You to Angi!
Angi Near returned to work part time during the surge of enrollments and was instrumental in ensuring curriculums were ordered. We are grateful she was willing to step up and provide her expertise. She will be missed!

New Fairbanks Staff:
Bob Hawkins - Advisory Teacher
I moved to Alaska from Oregon in 1976 to teach in Barrow. I met my wife Debbie, from Montana, there and we moved to Fairbanks. I have taught and coached in different area high schools for 35 years; we have 2 sons, a daughter and 3 grandkids. For fun I enjoy most sport activities and working on and using my motorcycles, cars and bicycles. I spend most summers in the lower 48 traveling by motorcycle.
I have been with YKSD starting at Ruby in 2005, Minto in 2007, Hughes in 2008, Minto in 2011 and the District Office as a Career and Technical Education Specialist working with all the sites.
Heidi Nickel - Advisory Teacher
My name is Heidi Nickel. I grew up in Wisconsin where I earned my bachelor's degree from Viterbo University. I have been a teacher over various age levels since 2001. I have also obtained my master's degree in curriculum and instruction. Currently I live in North Pole with my husband of 21 years Chris (who was my high school sweetheart), our 17 year old daughter Kadence, our 15 year old son Koda, and our 4 year old daughter Selah. Fun little fact about me is that I am a drummer and I can say all 50 states in alphabetical order in less than 20 seconds. I am so excited to be part of the Raven team!
Kim Christensen - Advisory Teacher
My name is Kim Christensen. I have a wonderful husband named Eric. We have three grown boys and are now empty nesters! I am from Colorado and recently just moved to Fairbanks. I have been a teacher for about 20 years and I am excited to be a part of the Raven team. I enjoy outdoor activities, shopping, and spending time with my family.
Juneau Office:
Welcome to the 20/21 School Year!
Our Juneau office has been quite busy with processing enrollments this fall, but we have also enjoyed making some time for fun virtual activities and increasing the amount of engagement in our Facebook Group for enrolled families. We are striving to collect and share ideas from veteran homeschooling families and are pleased that we can offer an assortment of weekly activities for engagement across all age categories from preschool through adult including Show and Tell/Story Time, Art with Rocky classes, Quarantweenies/Teen Chats, and Morning Mug for parents. Monthly happenings include Virtual PAC Meetings, FlipGrid Featured Topics, and other virtual activities. Be sure to keep an eye on the weekly reminders for full details and check our online calendar often to see what is coming up and for links to all the activities that are scheduled. We enjoyed seeing the smiles on the faces of the preschool kids when they got their special backpacks, and it has been wonderful connecting with so many families who are a part of our homeschooling family this year. Our office is open for scheduled visits Tues-Thurs and our library is overflowing with great books that would love to be read, so we hope you'll give us a call to set up a time to come visit our office library, check in with your advisory teacher, and get some freebies from our giveaway shelf. Below we have shared some resource recommendations and introductions of all of our staff so you can get to know your Juneau Office Team a little better. Please reach out anytime you need assistance. We are here to support you!

My name is Jaena Fiscus, I am 19 years old and I have lived in Juneau, Alaska for 11 years! I am currently enrolled as a full time online student with Liberty University and am working towards a bachelor's degree in Zoo and Wildlife Biology. My main passion is animals, learning about their behaviors and how they interact with other animals, however, I also enjoy cooking, playing my guitar or ukulele and spending time with my family.
Joan Gianotti - Advisory Teacher
Hello, my name is Joan Gianotti. I have been a Raven advisory and special education teacher for six years. I was born and raised in Sitka and have lived in Juneau for the past 27 years. I am married to Chris, who is a structural engineer, and we have three adult children: Mary (who lives in Anchorage), Andrew (soon to return from England), and Zach (recently returned to Juneau). I also have one grand dog, Gilkey, who usually lives with Mary in Anchorage but I get to watch him when her work takes her out of town. I enjoy daily walks, reading, cooking, traveling, making jelly in the summer and fall, and connecting with family and friends. I travel to Sitka 2-3 times a year and it is nice to visit our Raven families there when I am visiting.
Tracy Gunkel - Advisory Teacher
Holly Shier - Administrative Assistant
I grew up in the hot California high desert, attended college in hot Pensacola, FL where I got my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education, and then moved to cold Juneau in the summer of 2011 so we could be near my husband’s family. It was definitely a shock to my system with the summer being the temperature that I was used to for winter, but I’ve adapted since then and am very good at layering now. I taught for three years in the classroom before coming to Raven and have enjoyed working with families here for the past eight years and utilizing my administration skills during that time. I love to wear colorful outfits and crazy fun earrings, and also enjoy the hobbies of crocheting and reading.
Beth Taube - Advisory Teacher
I am Beth Taube and am so honored being asked to serve you as an advisory teacher. For the last 30 years I have been blessed to live in Alaska, primarily Fairbanks and Glennallen, moving to Juneau four years ago. I have taught pre-K through 12th grade. I sincerely believe that no one knows a student better than their family, that here are many ways to learn, and families deserve options when educating their children. My husband and I have three amazing daughters, who have ventured out into the world, but are always close to my heart and sending me texts! I enjoy sewing, my pink bicycle, and continually learning new things.
Wasilla Office:
We in the Wasilla office like to laugh! We find that laughter is good medicine. It makes the work more pleasurable and the time pass more quickly. Something happens to you- to your mindset and body- as you let that laugh make its way up and out! With that in mind, we hope that the following will induce some:
- “I’m homeschooled, so there’s not much you can ground me from. So, what do my parents ground me from? Cereal. They grounded me from cereal.”
- “You might be a homeschooler if…birthdays are school holidays.”
Can you imagine how fun it will be when we can resume in person activities? In the meantime, as someone from Book Shark (vendor) said, “I wish my fourth grade teacher who always said, ‘We are not at school to socialize.’ Would please tell that to everyone who asks me about homeschool socialization.”
Have you checked out Art with Rocky or has your teen taken part of a Quarantweenies chat or Teen Chat? Have you joined our Facebook page, linked your Fred Meyers reward to our office, or put your order in for your students’ Raven t-shirts (make sure and do by Nov. 9th)?
Thank you for your patience as your orders and electronics have taken longer than normal to arrive. You are doing a great job with what you have- teaching your children that you can make do and get creative.
School picture day was a success! We also enjoyed being able to see all of the great costumes that students and parents alike sported at our drive through costume parade; thank you for participating! We hope that you enjoyed your goodies.
As we look to the coming months, we would like to encourage you with a few quotes.
- “ Education must not simply teach work - it must teach Life.” ~ W.E.B. Du Bois
- “Children may be more capable of competent self-directed learning than we give them credit for…” ~ John Holt
- “There is no such thing as a child who hates to read. There are only children who have not found the right book.”~Frank Serafini
Parents- you can do this! Students- you can do this! Together, we CAN DO this thing called homeschooling, Raven style!
